THE CALCULATION METHOD / 03

Standard Deduction Calculation Formula

The calculation starts with eligible salary or pension income, applies the relevant statutory limit, and subtracts the deduction before determining taxable income.

How the standard deduction is calculated
Calculation stage Formula or treatment
Eligible annual income Annual salary or eligible regular pension before standard deduction.
Standard deduction Lower of eligible income and the applicable ₹50,000 or ₹75,000 limit.
Taxable salary Eligible annual income minus standard deduction.
Other old-regime deductions Subtract additional eligible deductions and professional tax where permitted.
Estimated tax saving Income tax without standard deduction minus income tax after standard deduction, using the same regime and assumptions.
The standard deduction is a deduction from eligible income, not a direct tax credit or a guaranteed cash payment.

For example, an employee with annual taxable salary before standard deduction of ₹10,00,000 can deduct ₹75,000 under the new regime for FY 2026–27, leaving ₹9,25,000 before any further permitted adjustments. Under the old regime, a ₹50,000 standard deduction leaves ₹9,50,000 before other eligible deductions. The final taxes differ because the two regimes also have different slabs and rebate rules.

01 THE BASICS

What Is Standard Deduction in India?

The standard deduction is a fixed deduction permitted from eligible salary income under Section 16(ia) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, as applicable to the financial years covered here. It reduces the amount of salary included in taxable income without requiring an employee to submit bills for an equivalent expense.

Unlike deductions that depend on qualifying investments or expenditure, the salary standard deduction generally does not require proof of how the deducted amount was spent. An eligible employee can receive the benefit through salary-tax computation, subject to the income and statutory limits applicable to the selected financial year.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India tool separates this deduction from other tax benefits. This distinction is important because a ₹75,000 deduction does not mean ₹75,000 is refunded by the government. Instead, it reduces the income on which tax is calculated.

Who can claim the standard deduction?

Eligible salaried employees and recipients of qualifying regular pension income can generally claim the salary standard deduction. Pension received from a former employer is normally treated under the salary head for this purpose. Family pension is different and has its own deduction provisions.

Self-employed professionals and business owners cannot claim the salary standard deduction merely because they earn an amount comparable to an employee's salary. Their business or professional income is governed by different computation rules. Employment classification and the relevant income head therefore matter.

The deduction is also different from employee provident-fund contributions, HRA exemption and deductions under Chapter VI-A. For related salary components, visit the salary breakup calculator or review the difference between CTC and gross salary.

02 TAX REGIMES

Standard Deduction Under Old and New Tax Regimes

The standard deduction is available under both the old and new income-tax regimes for eligible salary income. However, the maximum amounts differ. For FY 2025–26 and FY 2026–27, the old-regime limit is ₹50,000, while the new-regime limit is ₹75,000.

The ₹75,000 new-regime amount was introduced from FY 2024–25. Before that change, the new-regime salary standard deduction was ₹50,000. This calculator covers FY 2024–25 through FY 2026–27 and applies the corresponding limits.

Five important benefits of the standard deduction

  1. Reduced taxable salary: Eligible salary income is lowered before calculating income tax.
  2. No matching expense receipts: The fixed deduction does not require proof of spending an equivalent amount.
  3. Availability in both regimes: Eligible salaried taxpayers can receive the benefit under either regime.
  4. Benefit for eligible pensioners: Qualifying regular pension income can receive the salary standard deduction.
  5. Potential income-tax savings: A lower taxable income can reduce tax liability, depending on slabs and rebate eligibility.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India estimate helps quantify these benefits using your annual salary. It also demonstrates why the larger new-regime deduction should not be the only factor in choosing a tax regime.

Under the old regime, taxpayers may qualify for other deductions and exemptions that are generally unavailable under the new regime. For example, eligible HRA exemption, Section 80C deductions and Section 80D benefits can materially affect the comparison.

Use the tax regime savings comparison calculator to investigate the overall difference. The HRA calculator is useful when rent and actual salary components influence your old-regime taxable income.

03 WORKED EXAMPLES

How to Use Standard Deduction Calculator India

Start by identifying the correct annual salary figure. Use salary taxable under the salary head before the standard deduction, rather than assuming your advertised CTC is taxable income. Employer contributions, exemptions, perquisites and salary structure may make the two figures different.

  1. Enter your annual salary or qualifying regular pension amount in Indian rupees.
  2. Select the financial year relevant to the income being calculated.
  3. Choose the old regime, new regime or comparison option.
  4. Enter other eligible old-regime deductions and professional tax, if applicable.
  5. Calculate and review the standard deduction, taxable income and estimated annual income tax.

Example 1: Annual salary of ₹8 lakh

Assume an eligible employee earns ₹8,00,000 in annual taxable salary before standard deduction. Under the new regime for FY 2026–27, the deduction is ₹75,000, leaving taxable income of ₹7,25,000. Under the old regime, ₹50,000 is deducted, leaving ₹7,50,000 before other deductions.

At this salary level, the new-regime Section 87A rebate may eliminate ordinary income-tax liability for an eligible resident individual. Therefore, the deduction can reduce taxable income even when the final tax payable is already zero because of the rebate.

Example 2: Annual salary of ₹12 lakh

For ₹12,00,000 in eligible salary, the new-regime deduction of ₹75,000 reduces taxable income to ₹11,25,000. An eligible resident individual with only ordinary taxable income can qualify for the new-regime rebate at this level, resulting in zero estimated tax under the simplified assumptions.

Under the old regime, the standard deduction reduces the same salary to ₹11,50,000 before any further qualifying deductions. The tax result can therefore differ significantly. Enter your eligible old-regime deductions to make the comparison more relevant.

Example 3: Annual salary of ₹20 lakh

An eligible employee with ₹20,00,000 in annual salary can reduce taxable income to ₹19,25,000 under the new regime. The corresponding old-regime amount after standard deduction alone is ₹19,50,000. Both calculations still require progressive tax slabs and applicable cess.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India results show the estimated difference between tax before and after the deduction. This is more informative than multiplying the deduction by the highest slab rate without considering progressive slabs, rebates or marginal relief.

04 PENSION & ELIGIBILITY

Standard Deduction for Pensioners and Employees

Regular pension received from a former employer is generally taxable under the salary head. Eligible recipients may therefore claim the standard deduction subject to the applicable tax regime and financial-year limit. The same basic deduction ceiling applies to qualifying salary and regular pension income.

Family pension is not treated as salary merely because the deceased family member was previously employed. It is generally taxable under income from other sources, with a separate deduction provision and limits. Do not use the salary standard deduction against family pension without checking the relevant rule.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India workbench includes an eligible regular pension option, but it does not calculate family-pension deductions, commuted-pension exemptions or other retirement-specific adjustments. Pensioners with multiple income sources should calculate their complete tax position separately.

Can the deduction be claimed twice?

Having two employers during the same financial year does not ordinarily create two separate full standard deductions. The annual deduction applies to aggregate eligible salary income, subject to the relevant statutory ceiling. Similarly, salary and eligible regular pension income do not automatically provide separate full limits.

If you change jobs, combine the relevant salary figures and review Form 16 records from both employers. Multiple payroll systems may have estimated tax independently, but the final income-tax return must reconcile the combined annual income and applicable deductions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using CTC directly instead of the correct taxable salary figure.
  • Treating a standard deduction as a direct cash refund.
  • Applying ₹75,000 to the old regime.
  • Claiming the deduction separately for multiple employers.
  • Applying salary deduction rules to family pension or business income.
  • Ignoring Section 87A eligibility and marginal relief when estimating tax savings.

For payroll reconciliation, the monthly salary slip calculator and Form 16 tax calculation guide provide related context. Always check the income classification shown in your tax documents.

05 TAX PLANNING

How Standard Deduction Changes Income Tax and TDS

Employers generally estimate an employee's annual taxable salary and income-tax liability before distributing tax deducted at source across payroll periods. The standard deduction is part of that annual computation. Its effect on monthly TDS depends on projected income, tax regime, rebate eligibility and payroll adjustments.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India tool calculates a simplified annual tax comparison rather than predicting the exact TDS on every payslip. Actual monthly withholding may vary because of bonuses, joining dates, declarations, previous employment and adjustments made during the financial year.

For FY 2026–27, the new regime generally provides a Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 for eligible resident individuals with ordinary taxable income not exceeding ₹12,00,000. Marginal relief can apply just above that threshold. The rebate does not apply in the same way to income taxed at special rates.

Taxpayers should also distinguish the rebate from the standard deduction. The deduction reduces eligible salary before tax is computed. Section 87A can then reduce qualifying tax liability, subject to statutory conditions. These are separate steps, even when both contribute to a zero-tax outcome.

Use the Section 87A rebate calculator for additional rebate context and the monthly salary TDS calculator for payroll withholding estimates.

Limitations of a standard deduction estimate

This calculator does not determine tax on capital gains, lottery income or other special-rate income. It also excludes surcharge, relief under Section 89, foreign tax credits, employer-specific exemptions and several adjustments that can affect final tax liability.

For old-regime comparisons, the calculator treats user-entered additional deductions as eligible amounts. It cannot verify investment documentation, deduction-specific caps or HRA calculations. Only enter amounts that genuinely qualify under the applicable rules.

The Standard Deduction Calculator India calculation is best used for understanding the deduction and comparing simplified scenarios. A complete income-tax return requires all taxable income, exemptions, deductions, credits and applicable legal provisions.

For eligible salary and regular pension income, the maximum standard deduction is ₹75,000 under the new tax regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime. The actual deduction cannot exceed the qualifying income.

02 Is standard deduction available in the new tax regime?+

Yes. Eligible salaried employees and qualifying pensioners can claim the standard deduction under the new regime. For FY 2026–27, the maximum amount is ₹75,000.

03 Can I claim ₹75,000 under the old regime?+

No. For the financial years covered by this calculator, the old-regime standard deduction is limited to ₹50,000. The ₹75,000 maximum applies to the new regime from FY 2024–25 onward.

04 Does the standard deduction require proof?+

The fixed salary standard deduction generally does not require bills or receipts for matching expenses. However, your salary income and eligibility must be correctly reported in the relevant tax records.

05 Is standard deduction available to pensioners?+

Eligible regular pension income taxable under the salary head can qualify. Family pension is treated separately and has different deduction rules. The Standard Deduction Calculator India tool models qualifying regular pension only.

06 Can self-employed people claim standard deduction?+

Self-employment or business income does not qualify for the salary standard deduction merely because it is earned regularly. Other business or professional tax provisions may apply.

07 Is standard deduction deducted from CTC?+

No. It is deducted from eligible salary income for income-tax purposes. CTC may include employer contributions and other compensation components that require separate treatment before calculating taxable salary.

08 How much tax does a ₹75,000 deduction save?+

The actual tax saving depends on taxable income, applicable tax slabs, rebate eligibility and cess. A ₹75,000 deduction reduces eligible taxable income by up to ₹75,000; it does not guarantee an equivalent reduction in tax payable.

09 Is standard deduction separate from Section 80C?+

Yes. The salary standard deduction is separate from Section 80C. Section 80C deductions are generally associated with the old regime and are subject to their own eligibility requirements and limits.

10 Can two employers each provide a standard deduction?+

Multiple employers do not create multiple full annual standard deductions. Eligible salary income is combined for the financial year, and the statutory annual deduction limit applies to the total.

11 Does standard deduction automatically make ₹12.75 lakh salary tax-free?+

For FY 2026–27, an eligible resident individual with ₹12.75 lakh of qualifying salary and no other taxable income can have ₹12 lakh of taxable income after the ₹75,000 deduction. The new-regime Section 87A rebate can then eliminate ordinary income tax, subject to its conditions.

12 How accurate is this standard deduction calculator?+

The Standard Deduction Calculator India workbench uses published deduction limits and simplified tax rules for the selected year. It does not cover every exemption, income category, surcharge or individual tax circumstance. Verify final figures with official guidance or a qualified tax professional.
