02 THE FORMULA

CTC to In Hand Salary Calculation Formula

The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator starts by separating employer costs from the salary paid to an employee. This matters because employer PF contributions and certain benefits may be included in annual CTC even though they never appear as regular cash earnings.

Basic monthly take-home formula

Monthly in-hand salary = monthly fixed gross salary − employee EPF − professional tax − estimated income-tax TDS − other applicable employee deductions.

Annual CTC divided by twelve is therefore not necessarily your monthly gross salary. A package may include variable bonuses, employer provident fund, gratuity provisions and insurance. Their treatment depends on the compensation structure.

This calculator removes employer PF from CTC when you select that it is included. It then separates annual variable pay from the regular monthly result, estimates income tax on annual gross earnings and deducts employee EPF and professional tax.

A worked 12 LPA example

Assume ₹12,00,000 annual CTC, basic salary at 40%, employer PF included in CTC and both employee and employer contributions modeled at ₹1,800 monthly. Assume no bonus, professional tax of ₹200 monthly and the new tax regime.

ComponentIllustrative amount
Annual CTC₹12,00,000
Employer PF included in CTC₹21,600 annually
Estimated annual gross salary₹11,78,400
Monthly gross salary₹98,200
Employee PF₹1,800 monthly
Professional tax₹200 monthly
Illustrative monthly in-hand before other deductions₹96,200

This illustration assumes eligibility for the applicable new-regime rebate and no other taxable income or special-rate income. A different PF basis, bonus, taxable benefit or employer policy can materially change the result. Use the CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator with your own offer details rather than treating the example as a universal 12 LPA take-home figure.

03 THE DEFINITIONS

Understanding CTC, Gross Salary And In Hand Pay

CTC means cost to company. It represents the employer's stated annual compensation cost, not necessarily money transferred to your bank account. Employers can include components that are paid later, conditional, noncash or allocated toward statutory benefits.

Gross salary is generally the salary before employee-side deductions. It can include basic pay, house rent allowance, special allowance and other taxable cash earnings. The exact definition of gross pay in an offer letter or payroll system should always be checked.

In-hand salary, also called net salary or take-home pay, is what remains after employee provident fund, professional tax, TDS and any additional payroll deductions. It is the number most relevant to monthly expenses, rent payments and household budgeting.

The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator distinguishes these figures so that a higher headline package is not confused with higher recurring cash pay. For a deeper comparison, review the CTC versus gross salary guide and the salary breakup calculator.

Why two identical CTC offers can differ

One employer may include a large performance bonus, while another offers mostly fixed cash pay. One may cap provident fund contributions, while another contributes on full qualifying wages. Insurance, gratuity and additional benefits may also be counted differently in the package.

These choices influence the monthly payslip even before personal taxes are considered. Comparing only the annual CTC conceals those differences, so request an itemized offer breakdown.

04 THE PROCESS

How To Use CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator In 5 Steps

A useful estimate requires more than the annual package amount. Follow these five steps to match the calculator settings to your offer letter or current payslip.

  1. Enter annual CTC. Use the employer's stated annual compensation amount, including the variable component if it is part of the quoted package.
  2. Confirm basic salary. Enter the basic-pay percentage and select whether EPF is based on full basic pay or the modeled wage ceiling.
  3. Check employer PF. Choose whether employer provident fund is already included in CTC, since subtracting it twice would understate gross pay.
  4. Add tax-related information. Select the tax regime, monthly professional tax and any eligible old-regime deductions or rent information.
  5. Review the results. Compare monthly fixed in-hand pay, annual take-home, EPF, tax and excluded variable compensation with your expected payslip.

The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator updates when you submit the form. Try changing one assumption at a time. This makes it easier to see whether the difference comes from PF, tax regime, variable compensation or the share of salary treated as basic pay.

What to enter when the offer is incomplete

If the company has not disclosed the salary breakup, use an assumption only for preliminary planning. The default basic share and professional tax are examples, not national payroll rules. Ask HR for fixed gross, employer PF, gratuity, insurance, variable compensation and expected monthly deductions.

For a full component view, use the offer-letter breakdown calculator. Its purpose is different from estimating the final bank-credit amount: it helps you understand what the offer contains.

05 THE DEDUCTIONS

EPF, Employer Contributions And Professional Tax

Employee provident fund is commonly a recurring salary deduction for eligible employees. A standard illustrative contribution is 12% of the applicable qualifying wage. Where the ₹15,000 monthly statutory wage ceiling is used, the modeled employee contribution is ₹1,800 per month.

Contributions are not always restricted to that example. Depending on applicable rules, eligibility and employer policy, contributions may be calculated on higher qualifying wages. The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator offers a capped basis, full-basic basis and no-EPF option for scenario comparisons.

Employer PF is different from employee PF. The employer contribution may already be part of your quoted CTC, whereas the employee contribution is generally deducted from salary. The employer's allocation among provident fund and pension components is not modeled in detail here.

Professional tax is a separate state-level levy where applicable. Rates and applicability vary, so the default ₹200 monthly value should not be considered correct for every location. Some states do not levy professional tax, and some have month-specific rates.

Check the employee EPF calculator and statewise professional-tax rates guide for related details. Statutory EPF information can also be checked directly with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.

Deductions this estimate does not automatically include

Payroll may also contain employee state insurance contributions, loan recovery, meal deductions, voluntary provident fund, insurance premiums, salary advances or other authorized deductions. These are not automatically subtracted in this simplified model.

If these items appear on your payslip, deduct them separately from the estimated result. A payslip deduction breakdown can help identify the reason your actual bank credit is lower.

06 THE TAX CHOICE

Old Tax Regime Versus New Tax Regime For Salary

Income tax often explains a large portion of the difference between gross salary and take-home pay. The tax regime matters because slab rates, rebate eligibility and available deductions are not identical.

The new regime uses revised progressive slabs from assessment year 2026–27, a ₹75,000 standard deduction for eligible salaried taxpayers and a Section 87A rebate subject to legal conditions. The rebate applies to eligible ordinary-rate tax and cannot simply be inferred from the CTC figure.

The old regime generally permits more qualifying exemptions and deductions. The calculator models a ₹50,000 salary standard deduction, qualifying HRA, entered eligible deductions and professional tax. It uses the ordinary old-regime slab rates for an individual below 60.

A practical difference appears when an employee claims rent, eligible investments or insurance-related deductions under the old regime. However, entering high deduction amounts does not necessarily make that regime better; the relative slab rates also matter.

The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator displays an indicative annual tax amount for each regime. For a more detailed assessment, use the tax regime savings comparison calculator and review official Income Tax Department tax-rate guidance.

Important limits of the tax estimate

Results assume eligible ordinary salary income, resident individual rebate conditions and no surcharge. Special-rate capital gains, additional income, relief under Section 89, detailed perquisite valuations and complex deductions can alter final liability.

Actual monthly TDS may also vary because employers adjust withholding for previous earnings, declarations and bonuses. For that question, see the monthly salary TDS calculator.

07 THE DECISION

How To Read Salary Offers With Confidence

A salary offer should make recurring cash pay distinguishable from conditional or deferred benefits. Before accepting, confirm the annual fixed salary, payment frequency, performance-bonus rules, employee deductions and whether employer-funded benefits sit inside the headline CTC.

Watch for signing bonuses, retention amounts and incentives that may not recur every year. They can improve total compensation while leaving ordinary monthly cash flow largely unchanged. A joining bonus may also have repayment conditions.

Use the CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator to model the stable monthly pay first. Then evaluate variable compensation separately. Your housing budget and essential expenses should generally be planned against dependable cash earnings rather than an optimistic bonus outcome.

Compare offers through the fixed and variable pay calculator or the annual compensation comparison calculator. The best offer is not always the one with the largest displayed CTC.

Understand The New-regime Tax Bands.

These slab rates apply to eligible ordinary taxable income under the revised new regime from assessment year 2026–27. They are applied progressively, not as a single rate against every rupee of income.

The CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator uses these bands before considering the modeled Section 87A rebate and 4% health and education cess. The ₹12 lakh rebate threshold concerns eligible taxable income, not necessarily a ₹12 lakh CTC package.

For personalized statutory calculations, consult the official Income Tax Department calculator.

QUICK ANSWERS / 11

Questions To Ask Before You Sign.

These answers address common misunderstandings about annual packages, monthly salary and deductions.

01 What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?+

CTC is the stated employer cost of compensation. In-hand salary is the amount remaining after employee deductions and tax. Employer benefits and variable compensation can make CTC substantially higher than recurring cash salary.

02 How does CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator work?+

It estimates gross earnings after any modeled employer PF included in CTC, separates variable pay, calculates employee PF and professional tax, estimates annual income tax and reports regular monthly take-home.

03 How much will I receive monthly from 12 LPA?+

The answer depends on salary structure, provident fund basis, bonus, tax regime and other deductions. Enter ₹12,00,000 annually, then use your actual salary components instead of applying a universal in-hand percentage.

04 Is a salary below ₹12 lakh always tax-free?+

No. New-regime rebate eligibility is based on qualifying taxable income and applicable conditions, not headline CTC. Residency, ordinary versus special-rate income and other earnings may change the outcome.

05 Is PF always ₹1,800 per month?+

No. ₹1,800 is 12% of ₹15,000 and represents one commonly modeled wage-ceiling contribution. Actual PF depends on qualifying wages, statutory requirements and employer policy.

06 Can I claim HRA in the new tax regime?+

The ordinary HRA exemption is generally unavailable under the new regime. Under the old regime, eligible HRA exemption depends on rent, salary, actual HRA and metro classification. See the HRA exemption guide.

07 Why is my actual monthly TDS different?+

An employer may revise withholding for earlier deductions, additional income, declarations, bonus payments and remaining payroll months. This calculator divides modeled annual tax evenly for an illustrative monthly estimate.

08 Does this calculator include bonuses?+

Entered annual variable pay is included in the annual earnings and tax estimate but excluded from the regular fixed monthly salary. Annual take-home includes the modeled after-tax variable component, assuming it is paid in full.

09 Is professional tax charged everywhere?+

No. Professional-tax rules depend on the state and employee circumstances. Replace the default amount with the relevant figure from your payslip or official state guidance.

10 Does CTC to In Hand Salary Calculator include gratuity?+

No separate gratuity amount is automatically removed from CTC. If an employer includes gratuity or insurance within the quoted package, the gross salary and take-home may be overstated unless you account for those employer costs.

11 Can I compare the old and new tax regimes here?+

Yes, the result panel provides indicative tax under both regimes. The comparison is simplified and is not a substitute for a complete calculation using all eligible income, exemptions and deductions.

12 How do I verify the result against my payslip?+

Compare monthly gross earnings, employee EPF, professional tax and TDS line by line. Identify additional payroll deductions separately, then confirm annual totals using Form 16 and employer payroll statements.
