India Salary Guide 2026–27 Salary Breakup Calculator India
Salary Breakup Calculator India helps you understand how your annual CTC is divided into basic salary, house rent allowance, special allowance, provident fund, variable pay and monthly deductions. Build a clear salary structure and estimate what you may actually receive in your bank account.
Salary Breakup Calculator India: Calculate Your Pay
Enter your annual compensation and choose how the salary is structured. The calculator separates salary earnings, employer contributions and employee deductions to produce an illustrative monthly payslip.
The model assumes a resident salaried individual below age 60 with ordinary salary income. Tax, PF and employer benefits are simplified. It is not an official payroll calculation.
Actual salary slips may contain other allowances, recoveries, employer costs, ESI and tax adjustments.
Salary Breakup Examples by Annual CTC
Compare different annual compensation levels. The amounts below represent annual CTC, not guaranteed annual cash salary or monthly bank deposits.
Salary Breakup Calculator India Formula
A salary structure separates the employer's total compensation cost into cash earnings and employer-funded benefits. The following sequence explains how this calculator arrives at its figures.
| Component | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Annual cash gross | CTC − included employer PF − gratuity provision − other employer-only costs |
| Basic salary | Annual cash gross × selected basic percentage |
| HRA | Annual basic salary × selected HRA percentage |
| Special allowance | Cash gross − basic − HRA − annual variable pay |
| Fixed monthly gross | (Cash gross − annual variable pay) ÷ 12 |
| Monthly take-home | Fixed gross − employee PF − professional tax − estimated monthly income tax |
Salary Breakup Calculator India uses these relationships to make compensation easier to interpret. A salary package of ₹12 lakh does not necessarily mean ₹1 lakh reaches your account each month. Employer-funded benefits and payroll deductions create the difference.
For greater accuracy, compare the results with your appointment letter, company salary structure and actual payslip. The monthly salary slip calculator can help you examine the amounts presented in a conventional payroll format.
Understanding Salary Breakup in India
Salary Breakup Calculator India is designed for employees, job seekers, payroll learners and anyone comparing compensation offers. Its central purpose is to explain the difference between an employer's annual compensation budget and the salary an employee can spend each month.
Most salary packages include multiple components rather than one uniform payment. Basic salary, house rent allowance, special allowance, provident fund, gratuity provisions and incentives may all appear in a compensation statement. Their treatment depends on the employer's policies and applicable law.
Basic salary
Basic salary is the foundation of many salary structures. It can influence provident fund contributions, gratuity calculations and certain other benefits. Some employers use a basic salary percentage of gross pay, but no single percentage should be assumed for every employee.
The Salary Breakup Calculator India workbench lets you choose the basic percentage rather than imposing one universal company policy. For example, selecting 40% of an annual gross salary of ₹10 lakh produces ₹4 lakh in annual basic salary.
House rent allowance
HRA is a component commonly included in salaried compensation. It may qualify for a tax exemption under the old tax regime if the employee satisfies the relevant conditions. The actual amount of HRA paid is separate from the amount that may qualify for exemption.
Employers may express HRA as a percentage of basic salary. This calculator allows that percentage to be changed. For a detailed exemption calculation, consult the HRA exemption guide rather than treating the full allowance as automatically tax-free.
Special allowance and other earnings
Special allowance is often used to complete a salary structure after basic pay, HRA and other identified components are allocated. It is generally taxable as salary unless a specific exemption applies. Its name alone does not establish preferential tax treatment.
Employers may also provide travel benefits, reimbursements, meal benefits and other components. These can have different eligibility conditions and tax treatment. Salary Breakup Calculator India groups unallocated fixed cash earnings into special allowance for simplicity.
Variable pay and bonuses
Performance bonuses and variable incentives should be separated from guaranteed monthly salary. An annual target bonus is not necessarily earned or paid in full. The payout may depend on employee performance, business results, service conditions and contractual terms.
When you enter variable pay in Salary Breakup Calculator India, the calculator removes that amount from the recurring monthly gross figure. It retains the amount within the annual model, assuming full payout for illustration. Actual bonus tax withholding and payment timing can differ.
How to Use Salary Breakup Calculator India
The most useful starting point is the annual CTC in your employment offer. Before calculating, check whether this figure includes employer PF, gratuity, insurance, performance bonuses or other non-cash costs. These details determine how much of the package represents actual salary earnings.
- Enter annual CTC. Use the employer's stated annual compensation cost, not the amount deposited in your bank.
- Select basic and HRA percentages. Use the actual proportions in your offer wherever available.
- Choose the PF method. Select the wage-ceiling example, full-basic contribution or no-PF scenario as appropriate.
- Enter variable pay and employer costs. Separate bonuses, gratuity provisions and other employer-only costs included in CTC.
- Enter payroll deductions. Provide your monthly professional tax and relevant old-regime deductions.
- Review the calculated breakdown. Compare monthly basic pay, HRA, special allowance, gross salary and take-home pay.
- Verify against your documents. Use your offer letter, payroll statement and employer policy to confirm the result.
Salary Breakup Calculator India updates its estimate when you change a field. You can also use the salary presets to test different offers. Reset restores the default example and clears any custom assumptions.
Important: An annual salary package may include compensation that is neither paid monthly nor immediately available as cash. Always distinguish guaranteed fixed salary from contingent or deferred benefits.
For example, two employers might advertise the same ₹15 lakh CTC. One may include a substantial performance incentive and a larger employer benefit budget, while the other offers more fixed monthly cash. Their monthly bank deposits can differ even before personal tax planning.
Salary Breakup Calculator India is therefore most helpful when you compare equivalent compensation components rather than headline CTC alone. Use the same assumptions for each offer, then replace estimates with actual employer figures whenever possible.
Provident Fund, Gratuity and Payroll Deductions
Provident fund is a major reason gross salary differs from take-home salary. Employee contributions are deducted from gross earnings, while employer contributions are funded separately. If employer PF is already included in CTC, it reduces the cash gross available within that package.
The commonly used EPF contribution rate is 12% of the applicable contribution wage. In a capped example using a ₹15,000 monthly wage basis, the employee contribution is ₹1,800 per month. Contributions on higher wages depend on the applicable arrangements and rules.
Salary Breakup Calculator India provides capped and full-basic methods to represent these different scenarios. The tool assumes matching employee and employer contribution amounts for its simplified model. Actual EPS allocation and payroll treatment may require a more detailed calculation.
Employer PF versus employee PF
Suppose an annual package includes ₹57,600 of employer PF. That amount is part of the employer's compensation cost but is not ordinary monthly cash earnings. If the employee also contributes ₹57,600 annually, that second amount is deducted from gross salary.
These are distinct amounts. Deducting employer PF from CTC and employee PF from gross salary is appropriate when both assumptions match the offer. Deducting the employer contribution twice would understate cash pay.
Gratuity provision
Gratuity is an employment benefit governed by eligibility and applicable legal provisions. Some companies include a projected gratuity cost in annual CTC. This accounting provision is not equivalent to a guaranteed monthly cash payment to the employee.
The calculator includes an optional annual gratuity provision field. Enter a value only if your employer actually includes that provision in CTC. For entitlement questions, use the gratuity calculator and verify the applicable rules.
Professional tax
Professional tax is state-specific. It may be absent in one location and applicable in another, with differences based on state rules and earnings. It should not be represented as a single mandatory national deduction.
Enter the monthly amount shown on your payslip or confirmed by payroll. Salary Breakup Calculator India does not automatically determine professional tax from your location. The professional tax rates guide provides additional context.
Other deductions can include employee state insurance contributions, labour welfare fund payments, loan recoveries, meal deductions or voluntary benefits. These are not automatically calculated in this model. Check your actual payslip before treating the estimated net figure as a final amount.
For official provident fund information, refer to the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.
Income Tax and Salary Breakup Calculator India
Income tax affects take-home pay, but taxable income is not the same as CTC. Employer-only benefits, salary exemptions, standard deductions and other eligible adjustments can change the taxable amount. The chosen tax regime also influences the final calculation.
For FY 2026–27, the new-regime illustration uses the applicable progressive income-tax slabs and a ₹75,000 standard deduction for eligible salaried individuals. It also models the ordinary-income Section 87A rebate and marginal relief for eligible resident individuals.
The old-regime illustration uses a ₹50,000 standard deduction, the relevant slab structure for an individual below 60 and eligible old-regime deductions entered by the user. The calculator also estimates HRA exemption using rent, actual HRA and the applicable metro percentage.
New tax regime
The new regime generally offers revised tax slabs while restricting many exemptions and deductions available under the old regime. For eligible resident individuals, the Section 87A rebate can reduce ordinary-income tax to zero within the qualifying taxable-income threshold.
That does not mean every person with ₹12 lakh CTC owes no tax. CTC and taxable income are different, and the rebate has eligibility conditions. Special-rate income and other circumstances may require separate treatment.
Old tax regime
The old regime may be beneficial for some employees with substantial qualifying deductions and exemptions. HRA, eligible investments and other permitted deductions can influence the comparison. However, each deduction must satisfy its own statutory conditions and limits.
Salary Breakup Calculator India lets you compare estimated old and new regime tax using the same compensation inputs. It is a planning aid rather than a complete income-tax return computation.
Why monthly TDS may differ
Employers typically estimate annual tax liability and deduct tax through payroll. The actual monthly TDS may change after bonus payments, investment declarations, previous employer income or revised payroll estimates. Dividing annual tax by twelve provides only a simplified monthly comparison.
Verify applicable provisions using the Income Tax Department portal. You can also use the tax regime comparison calculator to examine the impact of different tax assumptions.
Salary Breakup Calculator India: ₹12 Lakh Example
Consider an employee offered an annual CTC of ₹12,00,000. Assume basic salary is 40% of annual cash gross, HRA is 40% of basic, employee and employer PF are calculated on a capped ₹15,000 monthly contribution base, and employer PF is included in CTC.
Assume no gratuity provision, no other employer-only costs, no annual variable pay and no professional tax for this particular example. These assumptions are illustrative, not a universal salary structure.
Illustrative annual salary breakdown
| Salary component | Annual amount |
|---|---|
| Annual CTC | ₹12,00,000 |
| Employer PF | ₹21,600 |
| Annual cash gross | ₹11,78,400 |
| Basic salary (40%) | ₹4,71,360 |
| HRA (40% of basic) | ₹1,88,544 |
| Special allowance | ₹5,18,496 |
| Employee PF | ₹21,600 |
| Monthly fixed gross | ₹98,200 |
The annual cash gross is ₹11,78,400 because the employer PF contribution of ₹21,600 is included within CTC. Basic pay and HRA are then calculated using the chosen percentages. The remaining cash earnings form the special allowance.
Before income tax, monthly gross earnings are ₹98,200 and employee PF is ₹1,800. Under the example's new-regime assumptions, ordinary taxable salary is ₹11,03,400 after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so the eligible Section 87A rebate eliminates the calculated income tax.
The resulting estimated monthly take-home is ₹96,400 when professional tax and other employee deductions are zero. Actual payroll may differ because of benefit costs, different PF arrangements, additional earnings, income sources or withholding adjustments.
Salary Breakup Calculator India allows you to modify every important assumption in this example. If your employer contributes PF on full basic salary instead, both employer cost and employee deductions can change materially.
Common salary breakup mistakes
- Assuming CTC divided by twelve equals take-home pay.
- Subtracting employer PF twice from compensation.
- Treating performance bonuses as guaranteed monthly earnings.
- Using the same professional tax deduction in every state.
- Assuming all HRA is exempt from income tax.
- Ignoring gratuity and insurance costs included in CTC.
- Comparing two offers without separating fixed and variable pay.
A reliable salary comparison should use the actual component-wise offer wherever available. When the employer has not provided a complete breakup, request one before making an important financial commitment.
Understand the New-Regime Tax Slabs.
Salary Breakup Calculator India uses the progressive new-regime tax bands shown here for the FY 2026–27 illustration. The calculation also considers the applicable salary standard deduction, eligible Section 87A rebate and health and education cess.
Tax is applied progressively rather than charging the highest slab rate on all income. The rebate and marginal relief rules are separate from the slab calculation and require eligibility checks.
The old-regime calculation uses its own slab structure. Neither calculation automatically covers special-rate income, surcharge, other income sources or every deduction available in an individual tax return.
| Annual taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | 0% |
| ₹4,00,001 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% |
| ₹8,00,001 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% |
| ₹12,00,001 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% |
| ₹16,00,001 – ₹20,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹20,00,001 – ₹24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% |

Salary Breakup Calculator India FAQs
Answers to common questions about salary structure, allowances, provident fund and monthly take-home pay.
01 What is a salary breakup? +
A salary breakup is the component-wise distribution of compensation into basic salary, HRA, allowances, bonuses, employer contributions and other benefits. It helps employees understand which parts of CTC are paid as cash and which represent employer-funded costs.
02 Is salary breakup the same as CTC? +
No. CTC is the total annual cost of employment to the company. Salary breakup explains the individual components within that total. Some components are paid as salary, while others may be benefits or employer contributions.
03 How does Salary Breakup Calculator India work? +
Enter annual CTC, basic and HRA percentages, PF assumptions, variable pay and deductions. The calculator estimates annual cash gross, monthly salary components and take-home pay using the selected tax regime and salary structure.
04 What percentage of salary should be basic? +
There is no universal basic salary percentage suitable for every employee. Employers use different structures subject to applicable requirements. The calculator's default 40% is an illustrative input that should be replaced with your actual basic salary proportion.
05 Is HRA always 40% of basic salary? +
No. The amount paid as HRA depends on the employer's salary structure. The 40% and 50% figures used in certain tax-exemption calculations relate to defined limits, not mandatory employer HRA allocations.
06 Does employer PF reduce take-home salary? +
Employer PF reduces the cash portion of CTC when it is included in the quoted package. Employee PF is deducted separately from gross earnings. Both should be identified correctly to avoid double counting.
07 Does Salary Breakup Calculator India include income tax? +
Yes. It estimates income tax using simplified old and new regime calculations for FY 2026–27. Actual tax can differ due to other income, eligibility, exemptions, deductions, payroll adjustments and statutory exceptions.
08 Can I calculate monthly salary from annual CTC? +
Yes, but dividing annual CTC by twelve is only a starting point. First remove employer-only costs and separate variable compensation. Then deduct employee contributions, professional tax and applicable income-tax withholding from fixed gross pay.
09 Is gratuity paid every month? +
Gratuity is not ordinarily paid as a recurring monthly salary component. Employers may include an estimated provision within CTC. Actual payment depends on applicable eligibility and legal requirements.
10 Why does my actual payslip differ from the calculator? +
Your employer may apply different PF rules, additional allowances, insurance costs, ESI, welfare deductions, tax adjustments or benefit recoveries. The calculator provides an estimate based only on the information entered.
11 Can I compare two job offers using this tool? +
Yes. Enter each offer's actual salary components and compare recurring fixed take-home, employer benefits and variable pay separately. A higher CTC does not always produce a higher guaranteed monthly salary.
12 Is Salary Breakup Calculator India suitable for payroll filing? +
No. It is an educational estimator, not certified payroll or tax-filing software. Use employer payroll records, official statutory guidance and professional advice for compliance, reporting and financial decisions.
