01THE BASICS

What Is Provident Fund (PF) in India?

The Employees' Provident Fund is a retirement savings arrangement for eligible employees in India. Contributions generally come from both the employee and employer, with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation administering the statutory scheme for covered establishments and members.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 helps employees understand how regular contributions may accumulate over their working lives. It is particularly useful when reviewing an offer letter, comparing salary structures, estimating retirement savings or examining the long-term effect of voluntary contributions.

Three related arrangements are commonly mentioned together: EPF, the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), and Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI). They serve different purposes. EPF builds an account balance, EPS provides pension benefits subject to eligibility, and EDLI provides eligible insurance protection.

Who should use a PF calculator?

Salaried employees can use the calculator to estimate retirement savings and understand their monthly payroll deductions. HR and payroll teams may also use the results as an educational illustration, although statutory contributions must always be calculated from the actual applicable wage basis and current rules.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 can also help employees who are considering a new job. Two employers may quote similar annual compensation while using different PF contribution arrangements, which can affect both monthly take-home pay and the employer-funded retirement benefit.

For a wider view of the compensation package, use the Salary Breakup Calculator India. This separates salary components before you assess the provident fund contribution.

02THE FORMULA

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 Formula

The basic employee EPF contribution is usually calculated as a percentage of eligible monthly wages. For a standard 12% contribution, multiply the applicable EPF wage amount by 0.12. The same general percentage is commonly used for the employer contribution before any applicable pension allocation.

Core provident fund calculation formulas
ComponentCalculation
Employee EPFEligible contribution wages × employee contribution rate
Employer total contributionApplicable employer contribution wages × employer contribution rate
Employer EPS allocationEligible pensionable wages × 8.33%, subject to applicable rules and available employer contribution
Employer EPF depositEmployer total contribution − applicable EPS allocation
Annual employee contributionSum of monthly employee EPF and VPF deposits
Projected EPF balanceOpening balance + employee EPF + employer EPF + credited interest

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 uses these relationships to estimate the EPF portion of retirement savings. It does not treat the employer's entire statutory contribution as EPF when an amount is allocated to EPS.

For example, if eligible monthly wages are ₹25,000 and the employee contribution rate is 12%, the employee deposit is ₹3,000. The employer's total contribution is also ₹3,000 at a 12% rate, but its allocation between EPF and EPS depends on pension eligibility and applicable pensionable wages.

Employees should check whether contributions are restricted to the statutory wage basis or made on higher wages. That distinction can materially change the result, especially for workers with higher basic salaries.

03PAYROLL DETAILS

Employee EPF, Employer EPF and EPS Contributions

The employee contribution normally reduces the cash salary received each month. The employer contribution is funded by the employer, although it may be included in the cost-to-company figure shown in an offer letter. Understanding this distinction prevents double-counting when comparing compensation.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 separates the employee's deposit from the employer's EPF deposit. This is important because the employer contribution may be divided between EPF and the Employees' Pension Scheme, depending on the member's eligibility and statutory rules.

Employee contribution

A common employee contribution rate is 12% of eligible wages. A 10% rate can apply to certain establishments or categories under applicable provisions. The calculator allows either percentage rather than assuming that every employee has the same payroll arrangement.

Employer contribution

The employer generally makes its own contribution at the applicable rate. Where EPS applies, a portion is allocated to the pension scheme. Employer EPF deposits form part of the interest-bearing EPF balance, while EPS allocations are accounted for separately.

Contribution wage ceilings in 2026

The statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPF coverage was reported as increasing from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 monthly effective 17 September 2026. The default wage-ceiling example reflects that change, while the calculator also provides the earlier ₹15,000 basis for historical or otherwise applicable calculations.

Actual payroll arrangements may include contributions on higher wages, legacy membership rules or establishment-specific treatment. Always reconcile your selection with the relevant EPFO notification and your employer's records.

For the official update, consult the Ministry of Labour and Employment's September 2026 announcement.

04WORKED EXAMPLES

5 Smart Provident Fund Calculation Examples

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 can be used for several common salary situations. The following five examples illustrate the contribution formulas without assuming that every employee has identical pension eligibility, wage limits or employer policies.

Example 1: Employee contribution on ₹15,000

At a 12% employee rate, eligible monthly wages of ₹15,000 produce an employee EPF contribution of ₹1,800. Across twelve months, that equals ₹21,600 before interest. The employer's allocation is calculated separately.

Example 2: Employee contribution on ₹25,000

For a monthly contribution wage basis of ₹25,000, the employee contribution at 12% is ₹3,000. Over a complete year without wage changes, employee deposits total ₹36,000. Employer EPF deposits may add to the account after applicable EPS allocation.

Example 3: Full-wage contribution on ₹50,000

If the applicable arrangement permits contributions on the full ₹50,000 monthly basic salary, the employee's 12% deposit is ₹6,000. That produces ₹72,000 in annual employee contributions, before interest or any additional voluntary deposit.

Example 4: Adding voluntary provident fund

Suppose an employee contributes the regular 12% plus another 5% voluntarily on ₹50,000 of eligible wages. The employee's combined monthly deposit becomes ₹8,500. The extra contribution does not automatically require the employer to match the additional amount.

Example 5: Long-term retirement projection

An employee aged 30 planning to contribute for another 25 years can enter the starting balance, salary growth and assumed interest rate. The projection then adds monthly deposits and estimated interest. Results will change if salary, contribution rates or future interest declarations differ.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 is most useful when you compare these examples with your actual payslip. A realistic starting balance and contribution basis usually matter more than selecting an optimistic interest assumption.

05INTEREST

How EPF Interest Is Calculated in India

EPF interest is calculated with reference to the applicable running balance and is credited according to EPFO's annual accounting rules. The interest rate is determined for each financial year, so a single rate should not be assumed to apply unchanged throughout an employee's career.

The officially notified EPF interest rate for financial year 2025–26 is 8.25% annually. The future FY 2026–27 rate should be checked separately when formally notified. The calculator therefore treats 8.25% as an editable planning assumption rather than a guaranteed future return.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 estimates monthly interest accrual and credits accumulated interest at the end of each projected financial year. This provides a practical long-term illustration, but it cannot reproduce every EPFO accounting detail, deposit date or member-specific adjustment.

Why monthly contributions matter

A deposit made earlier in a year may have more time to earn interest than a later deposit. Similarly, an existing EPF balance can earn interest while new contributions are being added. These effects become more noticeable over long projection periods.

For example, a member with ₹5 lakh already saved begins with a different interest-bearing balance from a new employee with no previous EPF savings. The opening balance should therefore be entered separately instead of being mixed into the current year's employee contributions.

Interest rate assumptions

Use the latest officially applicable rate for a current-year illustration, and test lower or higher assumptions when planning several decades ahead. A projection is not a guaranteed maturity value, and future government decisions may change the rate.

For current and historical announcements, see the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation and the official 2025–26 interest-rate announcement.

06LONG-TERM PLANNING

Retirement Planning With Provident Fund Savings

Provident fund savings can form an important part of an employee's retirement resources. However, the account balance alone may not meet every retirement expense. Inflation, healthcare costs, household responsibilities and retirement duration also affect how much money may be needed.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 provides a nominal rupee projection. It does not automatically adjust the final balance for future inflation or convert the balance into an inflation-adjusted monthly retirement income.

Salary growth and changing contributions

If your eligible wages increase each year, contributions may also rise when they are calculated on full wages. When contributions remain capped at a fixed wage ceiling, a salary increase may not produce a proportional rise in EPF deposits.

For this reason, the calculator applies annual salary growth to the starting eligible wages, then calculates deposits according to the selected contribution basis. It does not automatically assume that statutory wage ceilings will increase every year.

EPF versus EPS

EPF and EPS should not be combined into one interest-bearing corpus. EPF is an accumulated fund balance. EPS pension benefits depend on the relevant scheme rules, pensionable salary, service and eligibility conditions.

The calculator reports estimated employer EPS allocations separately. These amounts are not added to the projected EPF corpus and should not be interpreted as a withdrawable pension balance.

Withdrawals, transfers and taxation

Withdrawals, job changes and transfers can affect the actual balance. Tax treatment may depend on qualifying service, contribution levels, interest rules and withdrawal circumstances. For a related explanation, visit the EPF Withdrawal Tax Calculator.

Employees changing jobs may also benefit from the EPF Transfer Versus Withdrawal Guide. Maintaining accurate UAN and member account records is important when reconciling contributions across employers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using total CTC instead of eligible EPF wages.
  • Adding the entire employer contribution to EPF without checking EPS allocation.
  • Assuming every employee uses the same wage ceiling.
  • Treating an assumed interest rate as guaranteed for future years.
  • Including EPS contributions as if they were an EPF account balance.
  • Ignoring an existing EPF balance or previous transfers.
  • Confusing voluntary employee contributions with employer matching.

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 is intended to reduce these mistakes by showing the major components separately. For an official balance, use the relevant EPFO member account or passbook rather than a projected calculator figure.

QUICK ANSWERS / 10

Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026 FAQs

Answers to common questions about EPF contributions, interest, pension allocation and projected retirement savings.

01 What is Provident Fund (PF) Calculator India 2026?

It is an educational calculator that estimates employee EPF deposits, employer EPF contributions, applicable EPS allocations and a future EPF balance using your chosen salary, contribution period and interest assumptions.

02 What is the normal employee PF contribution rate?

The commonly applicable rate is 12% of eligible wages. A 10% rate applies to certain eligible categories or establishments. Confirm the rate shown in your payroll records.

03 Is employer PF the same as employee PF?

No. The employee contribution is deducted from salary, while the employer funds its own contribution. An eligible portion of the employer contribution may be allocated to EPS rather than EPF.

04 What interest rate does the calculator use?

The default assumption is 8.25% annually, corresponding to the officially notified EPF rate for FY 2025–26. Future rates can change, and the rate field is editable for scenario planning.

05 Does the calculator include pension savings?

It displays estimated EPS allocations separately. These are excluded from the EPF corpus because EPS pension benefits are governed by separate eligibility and benefit rules.

06 Can I calculate PF on my full basic salary?

Yes. Choose the full-wage option when that reflects your applicable contribution arrangement. A capped contribution basis may be appropriate for other employees.

07 Is voluntary PF included?

Yes. Advanced settings allow an additional voluntary employee percentage. VPF increases employee deposits but does not automatically increase the employer's contribution.

08 Why is my EPFO passbook balance different?

Your passbook reflects actual contributions, interest postings, transfers, withdrawals and adjustments. A projection uses assumptions and may differ because of deposit timing, wage changes or member-specific rules.

09 Can I withdraw the entire projected PF balance?

Withdrawal eligibility depends on the applicable EPFO provisions, employment circumstances and account status. A projected future balance is not a confirmation that the amount is currently withdrawable.

10 Does PF interest compound monthly?

EPF interest is calculated with reference to monthly running balances and credited under annual accounting rules. The calculator models this structure for planning rather than using a generic bank-deposit compound-interest formula.

11 What happens to PF when I change jobs?

Eligible members can generally transfer accumulated EPF balances using the prescribed process. Check UAN details, employment records and transfer status through official EPFO services.

12 Is the calculated maturity amount guaranteed?

No. The result depends on future salary, contributions, interest rates, pension eligibility and withdrawals. It is a projection rather than a guaranteed benefit or official EPFO statement.
