TDS CALCULATION METHOD / 03

Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator Formula

The calculation begins with projected annual taxable income and finishes with the balance of income tax that payroll needs to collect during the remaining financial year.

Monthly TDS = Maximum(0, Estimated annual income tax − TDS already deducted − other eligible tax credits) ÷ Remaining payroll months
How the monthly salary TDS calculation works
StageCalculation
Annual gross salaryProjected taxable salary before permitted deductions.
Taxable incomeSalary and declared ordinary income minus eligible exemptions and deductions.
Income taxApply the selected progressive tax slabs.
Rebate and cessApply qualifying rebate or marginal relief, then applicable 4% cess.
Remaining liabilitySubtract tax already deducted and other confirmed tax credits.
Monthly withholdingDivide the remaining positive liability by remaining payroll months.

For example, suppose annual tax is ₹1,20,000 and payroll has already deducted ₹40,000. With eight salary months remaining, the balance is ₹80,000 and the estimated monthly deduction is ₹10,000. If the same balance must be collected over four months, the deduction becomes ₹20,000 per month.

The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator therefore responds to two important variables: your projected annual tax and the time remaining to collect it. Your employer can revise both during the year when new information becomes available.

02 UNDERSTAND TDS

What Is Salary TDS And Why Is It Deducted Monthly?

Tax deducted at source, commonly called TDS, is a system through which an employer withholds income tax from salary payments and deposits the amount with the government. Salary withholding generally falls under Section 192 of the Income-tax Act framework applicable to the relevant tax year. It is an advance collection of your income tax rather than an additional tax.

Employers normally estimate taxable salary for the full financial year before determining withholding. They consider salary components, eligible declarations, applicable tax rules and information about other income or earlier employment when properly provided. The estimate can change as payroll receives new information.

The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator provides a simplified version of this annual estimation process. It does not assume that every salary payment must have the same deduction. Instead, it calculates the outstanding tax balance and spreads that amount across the months you enter.

Salary TDS versus other payslip deductions

Income-tax withholding is different from provident fund, professional tax, employee insurance and other payroll deductions. Provident fund generally contributes toward retirement savings, while professional tax is a separate state-level levy where applicable. Neither is automatically interchangeable with income-tax TDS.

To understand the full difference between gross salary and money received in your bank, use the salary after PF and tax calculator. You can also compare individual deductions using the payslip deduction breakdown tool.

Why annual salary matters more than one month's pay

Monthly withholding depends on the annual income projection. An employee receiving a one-time bonus may face higher TDS during the bonus month because the projected annual tax increases. Conversely, a corrected investment declaration or excess withholding earlier in the year can reduce later deductions.

The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator is especially useful when reviewing a payslip after a salary increment, bonus announcement, tax-regime declaration or job change. It gives you a transparent estimate to compare with your employer's calculation.

03 STEP-BY-STEP

How To Use Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator

Begin with your projected annual gross salary rather than the employer's total cost to company. CTC may include employer contributions, insurance and other benefits that are not ordinary cash salary. If you only know CTC, first use the CTC to in-hand salary calculator to understand the difference.

  1. Enter annual salary. Include projected fixed salary and taxable bonuses expected during the financial year.
  2. Select a tax regime. Choose new, old or the lower estimated tax for comparison.
  3. Enter other ordinary income. Include relevant declared income subject to the normal slab rates.
  4. Specify remaining payroll months. Enter a number from one to twelve.
  5. Add tax already deducted. Include salary TDS withheld earlier in the financial year.
  6. Enter eligible deductions. Under the old regime, use verified exemptions and allowable deductions.
  7. Calculate and review. Compare the estimated monthly withholding, annual tax and remaining balance.

Example: Salary TDS with tax already deducted

Assume annual gross salary of ₹18,00,000 under the new regime. After the illustrative ₹75,000 standard deduction, taxable income is ₹17,25,000. Applying the relevant slabs produces ₹1,45,000 before cess, giving estimated annual tax of ₹1,50,800 after 4% cess.

If ₹50,000 has already been withheld and six months remain, the outstanding liability is ₹1,00,800. The estimated monthly deduction becomes ₹16,800. Without previous withholding, an even twelve-month distribution would be approximately ₹12,567 per month.

Important: These figures assume ordinary salary income without surcharge, special-rate income or additional adjustments. Payroll may use different withholding amounts after accounting for declarations, rounding and payment timing.

What happens when the remaining tax is zero?

If confirmed withholding and credits equal or exceed estimated annual tax, the calculator displays zero further TDS. It does not show a negative monthly deduction or promise that your employer will refund excess withholding through salary. Any final refund or balance payable is determined through the applicable tax reconciliation process.

04 TAX REGIMES

Old Versus New Tax Regime For Monthly Salary TDS

India's old and new income-tax regimes can produce different withholding amounts even when annual gross salary is identical. The difference arises from tax slabs, standard deductions, exemptions, eligible investments and rebate provisions. The regime selected for payroll affects the employer's withholding estimate.

The new regime generally offers revised slabs and a higher standard deduction for eligible salaried individuals. The old regime retains several exemptions and deductions subject to conditions. The right comparison uses actual eligible claims rather than assumed deductions that may not be available to you.

New-regime salary TDS

For FY 2026–27, the calculator models the new-regime slabs beginning with a zero-rate band up to ₹4 lakh. It also applies the ₹75,000 salaried standard deduction and simplified Section 87A rebate rules for eligible resident individuals with ordinary income.

Under the qualifying conditions, ordinary taxable income up to ₹12 lakh may benefit from the rebate. This does not mean that every employee with ₹12 lakh CTC automatically has zero tax. CTC, gross salary and taxable income are different concepts, and special-rate income can affect the final result.

Old-regime salary TDS

The old regime uses a different progressive slab structure and generally permits eligible deductions such as specified savings, insurance payments and qualifying HRA exemption. The calculator accepts a combined deduction amount, but users must apply individual statutory limits before entering it.

The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator includes a ₹50,000 standard deduction for the old regime in its simplified model. It also applies the basic Section 87A rebate for eligible resident individuals where taxable income does not exceed the applicable threshold.

Use the tax regime savings comparison calculator for additional planning. The HRA exemption guide and standard deduction calculator explain two common adjustments in greater detail.

05 PAYROLL CHANGES

Why Monthly Salary TDS Changes During The Year

Employees sometimes expect their income-tax deduction to remain unchanged from April through March. In practice, an employer may revise monthly TDS when estimated annual taxable income changes. This is why two payslips from the same financial year can show different tax amounts.

1. Salary increments and bonuses

An increment increases projected annual income for the remaining part of the financial year. A performance bonus can have a similar effect, particularly if it moves taxable income into a higher slab. Progressive tax rates apply to the relevant portions of taxable income, not automatically to the entire salary.

2. Previous employer income

Employees changing jobs may need to provide details of salary and tax deducted by the previous employer. If earlier income is excluded from the current employer's projection, withholding may be too low. Review your previous Form 16 or available payroll records before estimating the combined annual liability.

3. Investment declarations and exemptions

Under the old regime, payroll may initially use provisional declarations and later request supporting evidence. If the employer rejects an unsupported claim, taxable income can rise and remaining-month TDS can increase. Enter only deductions and exemptions that you are eligible to claim.

4. Tax already paid or deducted

The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator separates annual liability from the amount still outstanding. This matters when salary TDS has already been collected or when other eligible tax credits are available. Enter confirmed credits only; speculative credits can understate the remaining tax.

5. Fewer remaining salary months

A shorter collection period can increase each month's deduction without changing the annual tax itself. For example, a remaining balance of ₹60,000 spread over ten months is ₹6,000 monthly. Spread over three months, it becomes ₹20,000 monthly.

When investigating a deduction mismatch, compare your result with the monthly salary slip calculator and your employer's payroll statement. These tools answer related but different questions: one estimates tax withholding, while the other helps explain payslip components.

06 CHECK YOUR RESULTS

Common Mistakes In Salary TDS Calculations

The most common mistake is entering CTC as taxable salary. Employer provident fund, insurance and other employer-funded benefits can make CTC different from salary income. Using an inflated starting figure can produce an inflated tax estimate.

Another error is dividing annual tax by twelve even after several months have passed. Payroll may need to deduct only the remaining balance, so previously withheld tax and remaining salary months are important. The Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator handles these inputs separately.

Employees also sometimes subtract employee PF directly from taxable income under the new regime. Ordinary employee 80C deductions are generally not available under that regime. Under the old regime, eligible employee contributions may qualify within the applicable deduction limits.

Do not assume that HRA exemption equals the full HRA allowance. The actual exemption depends on the statutory calculation and eligible circumstances. Similarly, not every insurance payment, investment or reimbursement qualifies for the deduction someone expects.

Finally, remember that salary withholding is only one part of tax compliance. Income from investments, capital gains, property and other sources can affect your return. Some income is taxed under special provisions that this simplified salary estimator does not model.

Five practical checks: Confirm gross salary, choose the correct regime, verify eligible deductions, account for previous TDS and check the number of remaining payroll months. These steps make the result more useful when discussing tax deductions with HR.

For year-end reconciliation, consult the Form 16 tax calculation guide. Form 16, AIS and Form 26AS can help identify reported income and tax credits, subject to their availability and accuracy.

QUICK ANSWERS / 09

Frequently Asked Questions About Salary TDS

Answers to common questions about payroll withholding, tax regimes and monthly salary deductions.

01 What does Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator calculate?+

Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator estimates annual income tax and the amount still to be deducted across remaining payroll months. It uses projected salary, ordinary additional income, tax regime, eligible old-regime deductions and tax credits already available.

02 How is monthly TDS calculated from annual salary?+

Estimate annual taxable income, apply the relevant slabs, rebates and cess, subtract tax already deducted and divide the remaining positive liability by remaining payroll months. The employer's actual calculation can include additional adjustments.

03 Is salary TDS always annual tax divided by twelve?+

No. That is a simple starting estimate when no tax has been deducted and twelve months remain. Bonuses, increments, previous employment, revised deductions and earlier withholding can change the amount deducted in subsequent months.

04 Can monthly TDS be zero under the new regime?+

Yes. Eligible resident individuals may have zero ordinary income tax after the applicable Section 87A rebate. Eligibility depends on taxable income and other conditions. A zero estimate is not guaranteed merely because CTC is below a particular amount.

05 Does the calculator include the ₹75,000 standard deduction?+

Yes. The new-regime model uses a ₹75,000 salaried standard deduction. The old-regime model uses ₹50,000. The calculator assumes eligible salary income and does not independently verify employment classification or other statutory conditions.

06 Can I calculate TDS after changing jobs?+

Yes, for an approximate combined annual tax estimate. Include projected taxable salary and other relevant income, plus confirmed withholding from the previous employer. Ensure salary is not counted twice and verify your employer's required declarations.

07 Does employee PF reduce taxable salary?+

Eligible employee PF contributions may qualify under Section 80C within applicable limits under the old regime. Ordinary Section 80C deductions are generally unavailable under the new regime. Do not subtract the same contribution twice.

08 What if my employer deducted more TDS than my annual tax?+

The calculator shows zero additional withholding when credits exceed estimated liability. It does not calculate or promise an immediate payroll refund. Excess tax may be reconciled through the applicable income-tax return and refund process.

09 Is TDS the same as professional tax?+

No. Salary TDS is withholding toward income tax, while professional tax is a separate state-level levy where applicable. The professional tax calculator provides related information.

10 Does a bonus increase monthly TDS?+

A taxable bonus may increase projected annual taxable income and therefore annual tax liability. Payroll may recover the additional tax during the bonus month or adjust deductions across the remaining financial year.

11 How accurate is the monthly TDS estimate?+

The result is an educational estimate based on the inputs and simplified tax assumptions. Actual withholding may differ because of surcharge, special-rate income, exemptions, payroll adjustments, relief provisions or employer-specific calculation methods.

12 Where can I verify salary tax deducted by my employer?+

Review payslips, Form 16 and available tax-credit records, including Form 26AS and AIS where applicable. Use the official Income Tax Department website to access relevant tax services and guidance.
