Employee Benefits & Tax Guide Leave Encashment Calculator India
Leave Encashment Calculator India helps employees estimate the value of unused earned leave, understand retirement-related tax exemptions and identify the amount that may be taxable.
Enter your eligible salary, unused leave balance and employment details to calculate a possible payout. Compare gross encashment with the applicable exemption rules before reviewing your full and final settlement.
Leave Encashment Calculator India: Estimate Your Payout
Use your employer's earned-leave records and eligible salary components. The calculator estimates gross leave encashment and, where applicable, the statutory retirement exemption for a non-government employee.
This tool estimates a gross payment and a possible exemption. It does not calculate final income-tax liability or net bank credit. Employer policies, statutory entitlements and tax classifications must be verified independently.
Leave Encashment Examples By Unused Days
Select a common earned-leave balance to populate the calculator. Your salary, eligible leave policy and payout divisor determine the result.
Leave Encashment Calculator India Formula
There are two different calculations: the amount an employer may pay for unused leave, and the portion of that payment that may qualify for income-tax exemption.
| Stage | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Daily eligible salary | Eligible monthly salary ÷ applicable payroll divisor. |
| Gross encashment | Daily eligible salary × payable unused earned-leave days. |
| Ten-month salary limit | Average eligible monthly salary × 10. |
| Statutory leave value | Average salary ÷ 30 × qualifying unutilised earned-leave days, subject to the statutory service-based limit. |
| Non-government retirement exemption | Lowest applicable amount among actual receipt, ten-month average salary, qualifying earned-leave value and remaining aggregate monetary ceiling. |
| Taxable encashment | Actual gross encashment minus eligible exemption. |
For example, ₹50,000 eligible monthly salary and 60 payable leave days produce ₹1,00,000 under a 30-day payout method. This amount is the estimated gross benefit, not necessarily the final tax-free amount or net bank credit. The Leave Encashment Calculator India workbench keeps those figures separate.
What Is Leave Encashment in India?
Leave encashment is a payment for eligible accumulated leave that an employee has not used. Employers may allow qualifying leave to be converted into money during employment, at retirement or when employment ends. The amount depends on the applicable leave rules, employment terms and the balance recognised by the employer.
Earned leave, sometimes called privilege leave, is commonly the relevant category. Casual leave and sick leave are not automatically encashable. A company's leave policy may restrict carry-forward, impose an accumulation ceiling or provide specific rules for settlement. Statutory protections may override less favourable contractual provisions where applicable.
The Leave Encashment Calculator India tool is useful when reviewing a retirement benefit, resignation settlement, offer-letter provision or HR estimate. It provides a transparent mathematical estimate without assuming that every employer follows the same leave policy.
Who may receive leave encashment?
Eligibility can arise for private-sector employees, government employees and other workers covered by applicable service rules. However, there is no single universal payout formula that automatically governs every worker in India. Employment category, applicable state or central law, standing orders and company policy can affect entitlement.
Some employees can encash accumulated leave during service. Others receive a payout only on a qualifying separation. Retirement-related income-tax treatment must therefore be considered separately from whether the employer owes a payment.
Important distinction: A leave balance shown in an HR portal is not necessarily identical to the number of days payable at separation. Confirm the encashable balance and salary basis before making financial decisions.
Which salary components are relevant?
For the statutory non-government retirement exemption, salary generally includes basic salary, qualifying dearness allowance forming part of retirement benefits, and qualifying turnover-based commission. Ordinary HRA, discretionary bonuses and unrelated allowances should not automatically be added to that statutory salary base.
An employer's actual payout policy may use a different defined salary. That is why the calculator asks for an eligible salary figure rather than treating CTC or monthly take-home pay as interchangeable with salary for leave encashment.
How to Use Leave Encashment Calculator India
Start with the approved earned-leave balance. Then enter the salary figure used under your employer's encashment policy. Select the relevant day divisor and enter completed years of service if you want to estimate the retirement exemption. The calculation takes only a few inputs, but their definitions matter.
- Confirm your leave balance. Use the final payable earned-leave days, not every absence category appearing in the HR system.
- Enter the eligible monthly salary. Exclude salary components that do not belong in the applicable calculation.
- Select the employer payout divisor. Use 30 or 26 days only when that matches your verified policy.
- Choose the employment and payment category. Retirement and in-service payments may have different income-tax treatment.
- Review the tax inputs. Enter the applicable ten-month salary average, relevant leave already taken and previous exemption utilisation.
- Compare the result with payroll. Check the estimated payout and exemption against the approved full and final settlement statement.
Example 1: Encashment of 30 unused days
Assume an employee has an eligible monthly salary of ₹45,000 and 30 approved payable days. If the employer uses a 30-day divisor, the daily value is ₹1,500. Multiplying that amount by 30 produces a gross leave encashment estimate of ₹45,000.
This calculation does not determine the exemption by itself. The employee's employment category, payment timing, average salary and statutory limits must still be considered. The Leave Encashment Calculator India workbench shows those calculations separately.
Example 2: Encashment of 60 unused days
Consider an employee with ₹60,000 eligible monthly salary and 60 approved leave days. Under a 30-day divisor, the daily rate is ₹2,000. The resulting gross payout is ₹1,20,000. If the employer instead applies an authorised 26-day divisor, the estimated gross payout would be approximately ₹1,38,462.
The difference illustrates why an online estimate should not replace the employer's written calculation method. The statutory tax-exemption computation also has its own rules and should not simply reuse the 26-day payout divisor.
Example 3: Retirement after ten completed years
Suppose a non-government employee retires after ten completed years with 60 qualifying unused earned-leave days, an applicable ten-month average salary of ₹50,000 and an actual encashment receipt of ₹1,00,000. Assume the service-based leave ceiling permits all 60 days and no earlier exemption has reduced the monetary cap.
The statutory leave value is ₹1,00,000. The ten-month salary limit is ₹5,00,000, and the remaining monetary ceiling is ₹25,00,000. The lowest applicable amount is ₹1,00,000, so the full receipt is potentially exempt under these assumptions.
If the statutory leave balance were lower, or a different salary average applied, the exempt amount could change. Use Leave Encashment Calculator India with your own service records instead of treating this example as a universal entitlement.
Leave Encashment Tax Exemption Under Section 10(10AA)
Indian income-tax treatment depends on the employment category and when the encashment is received. Section 10(10AA) provides retirement-related exemption rules, but it does not make every leave payout tax-free. The distinction between government employment, non-government employment and payment during service is essential.
Government employees
Qualifying leave encashment received by Central or State Government employees at retirement, whether on superannuation or otherwise, can be fully exempt under the relevant provision. This treatment should not automatically be extended to every public-sector undertaking, government-controlled company or other organisation.
The calculator provides a government category for an illustrative qualifying retirement payment. Users whose employment classification is uncertain should verify the position with their payroll department or a qualified tax professional.
Non-government employees
For eligible non-government employees, the exemption is restricted to the least of the applicable statutory amounts. The monetary ceiling was increased to ₹25 lakh for qualifying retirement receipts covered by the notification effective from 1 April 2023. This ceiling operates with the other statutory limits rather than replacing them.
The four principal comparisons are the actual amount received, ten months' average eligible salary, the cash equivalent of qualifying unutilised earned leave and the remaining aggregate monetary ceiling. Previous qualifying exemptions may reduce the available ceiling.
The qualifying earned-leave calculation is based on service-related entitlement, subject to the statutory maximum of 30 days for each completed year of service and reduced by relevant leave already availed. The calculator models this relationship using the completed-service and leave-taken inputs.
Encashment during employment
Leave encashment received during continuing service is generally taxable as salary. It should not be treated as a qualifying retirement receipt merely because the employer labels it earned-leave encashment. The Leave Encashment Calculator India tool therefore displays no retirement exemption for its in-service category.
Being taxable does not mean that the entire payment is deducted as income tax. The final tax payable depends on total taxable income, applicable rates, tax regime, withholding and other relevant circumstances.
Previous claims and the ₹25 lakh ceiling
The aggregate monetary ceiling is important for employees who have received eligible leave encashment from more than one employer or on more than one qualifying occasion. A fresh payment does not automatically create a new ₹25 lakh exemption allowance. Previous exempt amounts may have to be considered.
Enter prior qualifying exemption utilisation in the calculator. If earlier amounts exhaust the available monetary ceiling, the estimated exemption under that ceiling becomes zero. Verify the precise aggregation and statutory treatment against your employment and tax records.
For official provisions, refer to the Income Tax Department and the Income Tax e-Filing portal. The relevant notification and Section 10(10AA) should be checked for the assessment year and circumstances concerned.
Leave Encashment During Resignation and Final Settlement
When an employee resigns, the employer may prepare a full and final settlement containing unpaid salary, eligible leave encashment, reimbursements, incentive payments and permitted recoveries. These items should be shown separately so the employee can understand the amount credited and any tax deducted.
The Leave Encashment Calculator India estimate addresses only the leave component. It does not automatically add notice-period recovery, gratuity, outstanding advances, bonus adjustments or other settlement items. Those figures require their own contractual and statutory checks.
Review your employer's leave policy
Look for the annual earned-leave accrual rate, maximum carry-forward balance, encashment restrictions and salary definition. Also check whether unused leave expires, carries forward or must be paid when employment ends. An internal policy should be read alongside applicable employment legislation.
Different state laws and employment categories may impose different requirements. Employees should not assume that a contractual accumulation ceiling always determines the maximum legally payable amount. Where there is a conflict, obtain advice based on the applicable legislation.
Understand the 26-day and 30-day methods
Some payroll policies value leave using a 26-day working-month basis, while others use a 30-day basis or another prescribed method. These approaches can produce different gross payouts from the same salary and leave balance. The correct method depends on the governing policy and applicable law.
The statutory non-government income-tax exemption uses its own salary and leave rules. Choosing 26 days for the employer payout does not automatically change the statutory 30-day convention used for the qualifying leave-value calculation.
Check the settlement statement
Ask payroll to identify the approved leave balance, eligible salary, divisor, gross encashment, tax-exempt portion and any TDS adjustment. Compare these details with the Leave Encashment Calculator India result and request clarification if the assumptions differ.
Use the Full and Final Settlement Calculator India to organise other exit payments. The Employee Notice Period Recovery Calculator is useful when a settlement also includes notice-related deductions.
Leave encashment versus gratuity
Gratuity and leave encashment are distinct employee benefits. Gratuity generally relates to qualifying service under the applicable gratuity framework, while leave encashment concerns eligible unused leave. Their entitlement formulas and income-tax exemptions should not be combined.
Employees reviewing retirement benefits can also consult the Employee Gratuity Eligibility Checker and Gratuity Tax Exemption Calculator India. Keep each benefit as a separate line in the retirement settlement.
Common Leave Encashment Calculation Mistakes
The most common error is multiplying unused leave days by a daily rate calculated from the employee's full CTC. CTC may contain employer provident-fund contributions, insurance, gratuity provisions and other costs that do not form part of the applicable salary base.
Another mistake is treating every unused leave category as encashable. Sick leave, casual leave and earned leave may follow different rules. The approved payable balance should be established before applying any formula.
- Incorrect salary base: Using take-home pay or CTC instead of the applicable eligible salary.
- Wrong leave balance: Including days that are not payable under the governing rules.
- Incorrect divisor: Assuming that every employer uses a 30-day or 26-day payroll method.
- Tax classification errors: Treating an in-service payment as a qualifying retirement receipt.
- Ignoring prior exemptions: Applying the full monetary ceiling again without considering earlier eligible claims.
- Confusing taxable amount with tax: Treating the taxable portion as an immediate rupee-for-rupee deduction.
For better accuracy, use the Leave Encashment Calculator India workbench alongside the actual leave ledger, salary breakup and approved settlement statement. Where tax or employment-law treatment is uncertain, seek a professional assessment before filing a return or disputing payroll.
How Leave Encashment Tax Treatment Changes
Leave encashment is not subject to one universal exemption rule. The timing of receipt and employee classification determine which statutory treatment may apply.
The table summarises the principal distinctions used by the calculator. It does not replace the detailed eligibility conditions in Section 10(10AA).
For employment-related legislation, consult the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the relevant state authority.
| Employee / event | General treatment |
|---|---|
| Qualifying Central or State Government employee at retirement | Eligible receipt fully exempt under the applicable provision. |
| Non-government employee at qualifying retirement or separation | Exemption restricted to the least of applicable statutory limits. |
| Employee receiving encashment during continuing service | Generally taxable as salary. |
| Employee with earlier qualifying exemption claims | Previous exempt amounts may reduce the remaining aggregate monetary ceiling. |

Leave Encashment Calculator India FAQs
Answers to common questions about leave balances, payout formulas, retirement exemptions and final settlement calculations.
01 What is leave encashment?+
Leave encashment is payment for qualifying unused leave accumulated during employment. The amount depends on the payable leave balance, eligible salary and governing employment rules. Not every leave category is automatically encashable.
02 How is leave encashment calculated?+
A common gross payout method divides the eligible monthly salary by the applicable day divisor and multiplies the result by approved unused leave days. The employer's actual policy and applicable legislation determine which method is appropriate.
03 Is leave encashment tax-free in India?+
Not always. Qualifying Central or State Government retirement receipts may be fully exempt. Eligible non-government retirement receipts are subject to statutory limits. Leave encashment during continuing employment is generally taxable as salary.
04 What is the ₹25 lakh exemption limit?+
The ₹25 lakh monetary ceiling applies to qualifying non-government retirement leave-encashment exemptions under the relevant rules. It is one of several limits, not a guaranteed exemption of ₹25 lakh for every employee or payment.
05 Is the leave encashment formula based on 26 or 30 days?+
Employer payout policies can differ. Some use 26 days, while others use 30 days or another applicable method. The statutory non-government retirement exemption has a separate qualifying leave-value calculation based on the relevant tax provisions.
06 Does HRA count in leave encashment salary?+
HRA is not normally part of the defined salary used for the statutory non-government retirement exemption. The employer's gross payout salary definition may differ. Confirm both calculations independently.
07 Can I encash leave when resigning?+
Eligible unused leave may be payable on resignation, depending on applicable employment law, service rules and the employer's policy. The tax exemption must be evaluated separately from the employee's entitlement to receive the payment.
08 Is leave encashment included in full and final settlement?+
When payable, leave encashment is commonly included as a separate component of full and final settlement. Other items may include unpaid salary, reimbursements, gratuity and recoveries. Use the full and final settlement calculator for a broader view.
09 What happens if I have already claimed an exemption?+
Previous qualifying exemptions may reduce the monetary ceiling available for a later non-government retirement leave-encashment receipt. Enter the earlier exempt amount and verify the aggregation rules using tax records.
10 Does the new tax regime change leave encashment exemption?+
Section 10(10AA) treatment should be evaluated under the applicable statutory provisions. Do not assume that changing tax regimes automatically makes all encashment taxable or exempt. The final income-tax impact depends on the taxpayer's full circumstances.
11 Is taxable leave encashment equal to tax payable?+
No. Taxable leave encashment is the amount included in taxable income after any applicable exemption. The actual tax payable depends on total income, tax rates, other adjustments and withholding already made.
12 How accurate is Leave Encashment Calculator India?+
It provides a mathematical estimate based on the figures entered and simplified statutory rules. Actual results may differ because of employment classification, salary definitions, leave entitlements, prior claims and tax-specific exceptions. Verify material amounts with payroll records and applicable law.

Calculate another payout →Editorial and financial information notice: This calculator provides educational estimates and is not legal, payroll or personal tax advice. Actual entitlements depend on applicable employment legislation, government service rules, contractual terms, employer policies and approved leave records. Tax exemption depends on statutory eligibility and individual circumstances.
Calculation limitations: The non-government retirement model assumes the entered ten-month average salary is valid, treats completed years as the service basis and applies a simplified 30-day-per-year leave ceiling less entered leave already taken. It does not independently verify service continuity, salary-component eligibility, earlier employer records, unusual separation circumstances or all statutory exceptions. A negative statutory leave balance is treated as zero.
