New Tax Regime Calculator India
New Tax Regime Calculator India helps you estimate income tax for FY 2026–27 using progressive tax slabs, the standard deduction, Section 87A rebate, marginal relief and 4% health and education cess. Enter your income to understand your estimated annual liability and monthly tax burden.
New Tax Regime Calculator India for FY 2026–27
Calculate your estimated income tax using the applicable new-regime slabs. Choose your income type, enter annual amounts and review the calculation before using it for financial planning.
This simplified model assumes an individual taxpayer with ordinary slab-rate income and no surcharge, special-rate income or complex tax adjustments. Employer NPS deductions and other deductions must be independently checked for eligibility and statutory limits.
Income after tax is an annual estimate before payroll deductions and other personal expenses.

How to Use New Tax Regime Calculator India
The New Tax Regime Calculator India begins with your annual income rather than the amount deposited into your bank account each month. Enter annual gross salary, taxable pension or ordinary income. If you have additional taxable interest or other ordinary income, add it separately to avoid understating your liability.
For employees, the annual cost to company may contain employer provident fund, insurance, gratuity provisions and other non-cash benefits. These are not automatically the same as taxable gross salary. If you are unsure about the correct starting figure, review your salary breakup or use the CTC to in-hand salary calculator.
Five steps for calculating income tax
- Identify your annual salary, pension or other ordinary income.
- Apply the eligible standard deduction and permitted new-regime deductions.
- Calculate progressive tax on the resulting taxable income.
- Apply the Section 87A rebate or marginal relief where eligible.
- Add health and education cess and account for taxes already withheld.
For example, suppose a resident salaried employee earns ₹15,00,000 annually, has no other income and qualifies for the ₹75,000 standard deduction. The resulting taxable income is ₹14,25,000. Income tax is then calculated across the applicable slabs rather than charging one rate on the entire amount.
The New Tax Regime Calculator India displays taxable income, slab tax, rebate, cess and estimated monthly liability. It also allows you to enter eligible employer NPS contributions. You must check whether your actual contribution qualifies, including the applicable percentage limit, before entering a deduction.
Do not treat the estimated monthly tax as an exact payroll deduction. Employers may adjust TDS based on bonuses, prior withholding, declarations and remaining salary payments. The salary TDS calculator explains why monthly withholding can vary.
Section 87A Rebate Under the New Tax Regime
Section 87A can reduce the income tax payable by eligible resident individuals. Under the relevant new-regime provisions, ordinary taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 may qualify for a rebate of up to ₹60,000. This is a tax rebate, not an automatic deduction from gross income.
The distinction is important. A ₹12 lakh salary is not necessarily ₹12 lakh of taxable income, and a ₹12 lakh CTC is not necessarily ₹12 lakh of salary. The New Tax Regime Calculator India applies the standard deduction according to the selected income category before determining rebate eligibility.
Example: ₹12 lakh annual salary
A resident employee with ₹12,00,000 of gross salary and no additional income can generally deduct ₹75,000 as the eligible salary standard deduction. Taxable income becomes ₹11,25,000. The progressive slab tax is ₹52,500, which can be fully offset by the qualifying Section 87A rebate.
In this simplified example, final income tax and cess are zero. This does not mean every person earning ₹12 lakh has no tax liability. Residency, income classification, capital gains, other income and eligibility for the rebate can materially change the result.
Marginal relief above ₹12 lakh
Marginal relief is designed to prevent an abrupt tax increase immediately above the rebate threshold. For eligible ordinary income, it limits the income-tax amount in accordance with the applicable excess-income rule. It does not create an unlimited rebate for all higher-income taxpayers.
Consider taxable ordinary income of ₹12,10,000. The calculated slab tax before relief is ₹61,500. Under the simplified marginal-relief rule, income tax is limited to ₹10,000 before cess, producing ₹10,400 including 4% cess.
For deeper calculations, use the Section 87A rebate calculator. The New Tax Regime Calculator India does not model special-rate income, which can be excluded from rebate eligibility under applicable provisions.
Standard Deduction and Tax Benefits in the New Regime
The new tax regime generally offers fewer traditional exemptions and deductions than the old regime. However, certain deductions remain available when statutory conditions are satisfied. Understanding them helps prevent both overestimating and understating taxable income.
For qualifying salary and taxable pension income, the standard deduction is ₹75,000 under the relevant new-regime provisions. The New Tax Regime Calculator India applies this deduction to the selected salary or pension category, subject to the amount of that qualifying income.
Employer NPS contributions
Eligible employer contributions to the National Pension System may qualify for deduction under Section 80CCD(2). The amount depends on employer type, eligible salary and applicable percentage limits. Employees should not enter their entire personal NPS investment as an employer contribution.
For eligible private-sector employment under the new regime, the relevant limit can be up to 14% of qualifying salary. This does not automatically mean 14% of CTC. Verify the statutory salary definition and your employer's contribution records before claiming an amount.
Deductions generally unavailable
Common old-regime deductions such as regular Section 80C investments, most Section 80D medical insurance deductions and HRA exemption are generally not available in the new regime. Certain specific exceptions remain, so the correct treatment depends on the actual provision and taxpayer circumstances.
The New Tax Regime Calculator India provides a field for other eligible deductions, but it does not independently validate every deduction category. Enter only amounts supported by applicable law. You can explore employer NPS tax benefits for additional context.
For salary planning, remember that EPF contributions, employer contributions and tax deductions are different concepts. A payroll deduction does not automatically create a deductible amount under the new tax regime. Always reconcile payroll information with the correct income-tax provisions.
Old Tax Regime Versus New Tax Regime
Choosing between the two tax regimes requires more than comparing headline slab rates. The new regime offers revised slabs and a higher standard deduction for eligible salaried taxpayers. The old regime can remain relevant when a taxpayer qualifies for substantial deductions and exemptions.
The New Tax Regime Calculator India estimates liability only under the new regime. For a fair comparison, calculate your old-regime liability separately using your actual eligible HRA exemption, Section 80C deductions, medical insurance deductions and other applicable claims.
Consider a taxpayer paying substantial rent and making qualifying investments. The old regime might provide deductions that reduce taxable income. Another taxpayer with similar gross income but few eligible deductions may find the new regime more attractive. Neither outcome should be assumed without calculation.
When comparison matters most
- You receive HRA and pay qualifying rent.
- You claim significant old-regime deductions.
- You have income from multiple sources.
- Your annual salary changes substantially.
- You are reviewing your employer's tax declaration.
Use the tax regime savings comparison calculator and old tax regime calculator to assess both approaches. The New Tax Regime Calculator India is most useful as the new-regime side of that comparison.
Tax regime selection and switching rules can also differ for individuals with business or professional income. Do not assume the same election rules apply to every taxpayer. Review the applicable return instructions or obtain professional advice where business income is involved.
Common Mistakes When Calculating New-regime Income Tax
One frequent error is applying the highest slab rate to the entire taxable income. Indian income tax uses progressive slabs. Only the income falling within a particular slab is charged at that slab's rate. A person entering the 20% band does not automatically pay 20% on every rupee earned.
Another mistake is assuming the Section 87A rebate applies to every taxpayer. Residency and income classification matter. A non-resident individual cannot simply claim the resident-individual rebate. Special-rate income can also require separate treatment.
Some employees enter annual CTC as gross taxable salary. This can overstate the tax estimate if the package includes employer costs that are not ordinary cash salary. Others subtract employee PF as a deduction even when the selected regime does not permit that claim.
The New Tax Regime Calculator India also cannot determine tax on capital gains, lottery winnings, virtual digital assets or other special-rate categories. Those amounts may be subject to separate rates and rebate restrictions. Surcharge is excluded, making the simplified result unsuitable for high-income cases where surcharge applies.
Finally, annual income tax and monthly TDS should not be confused. TDS is tax collection through withholding, while final tax liability is determined by the applicable tax computation. Previous employer earnings, bonuses and already deducted tax can alter the remaining amount payable.
For reconciliation, consult your Form 16, AIS and relevant tax records. The Form 16 tax calculation guide and income tax refund estimator provide related explanations.
New Tax Regime Slabs for FY 2026–27
The New Tax Regime Calculator India uses progressive slab rates applicable to ordinary taxable income under the relevant FY 2026–27 provisions. Each rate applies only to the income portion within its corresponding band.
The standard deduction and Section 87A rebate are separate from the slab table. After calculating slab tax, qualifying rebate or marginal relief is considered, followed by health and education cess.
For example, taxable income of ₹15,00,000 generates ₹1,05,000 in slab tax before cess and any other applicable adjustments. At that level, the ordinary Section 87A rebate threshold has been exceeded, and the simplified calculation produces ₹1,09,200 including 4% cess.
Consult the Income Tax Department for official tax filing information and updated guidance.

New Tax Regime Calculator India FAQs
Answers to common questions about tax slabs, rebate eligibility, salary deductions and annual income tax calculations.
01 What is New Tax Regime Calculator India?
New Tax Regime Calculator India is an educational tool that estimates tax on ordinary income under the new income-tax regime. It considers eligible standard deduction, entered deductions, progressive slabs, qualifying Section 87A rebate and 4% cess. It does not replace a complete income-tax return calculation.
02 Is income tax zero for a ₹12 lakh salary?
An eligible resident salaried individual earning ₹12 lakh in ordinary gross salary, with no other income, may have zero final income tax after the standard deduction and Section 87A rebate. Different residency, special-rate income or additional earnings can change the outcome.
03 What is the standard deduction for FY 2026–27?
The applicable new-regime standard deduction for eligible salary and pension income is ₹75,000. It reduces qualifying income before tax is calculated. It is not an additional cash payment or a universal deduction for all categories of income.
04 Does the calculator include Section 87A?
Yes. The calculator models the ordinary-income rebate and marginal relief for eligible resident individuals. It excludes special-rate income and other circumstances that require a more detailed calculation. Review the rebate calculator for more information.
05 Can non-residents claim the Section 87A rebate?
The resident-individual Section 87A rebate is not generally available to non-resident individuals. The calculator therefore disables that rebate when non-resident status is selected. Other residency-related tax considerations remain outside this simplified model.
06 Does New Tax Regime Calculator India include cess?
Yes. It adds 4% health and education cess to the calculated income tax after applicable rebate or marginal relief. It does not calculate surcharge, so results for income levels where surcharge applies may understate actual liability.
07 Can I claim HRA in the new regime?
The usual HRA exemption is generally unavailable under the new regime. It may be relevant when calculating tax under the old regime, subject to eligibility and supporting records. Compare the regimes before choosing one.
08 Does the calculator include employer NPS deductions?
It allows entry of an eligible employer NPS contribution under Section 80CCD(2). The calculator does not independently verify employer type, salary percentage limits or documentary eligibility. Enter only the amount you have verified.
09 Is monthly TDS the same as annual tax divided by twelve?
Not necessarily. Annual tax divided by twelve provides an average monthly estimate. Actual payroll TDS may change because of bonuses, remaining pay periods, previous employment income and adjustments made by the employer.
10 Can I use the calculator for capital gains?
No. Capital gains and other special-rate income can have separate tax rates and rebate restrictions. This calculator is designed for ordinary income subject to progressive slabs. A full return calculation is needed when special-rate income is involved.
11 How do I compare the old and new tax regimes?
Calculate tax under both regimes using the same annual income and each regime's permitted deductions. Use the tax regime comparison calculator to understand the potential difference before making a declaration or filing decision.
12 Where should I verify the tax rules?
Use the Income Tax Department, the official e-filing portal, applicable legislation and your tax records. Consult a qualified tax professional for complex income or eligibility questions.
