Employees' Pension Scheme · India EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator
EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator helps you check whether your age, eligible service and pension membership may qualify you for a monthly pension under India's Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995.
EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator
Enter your age and EPS service details to receive an indicative eligibility assessment. The calculator distinguishes service qualification from the age and employment conditions required to start a pension.
Educational assessment only. The calculator does not access your UAN, EPFO account, employer records or pension claim status.
Service rounding, pensionable-service verification, early pension reductions, employment status and special EPS provisions can change your final entitlement.
EPS Pension Eligibility Examples by Service
These common service durations illustrate why the difference between withdrawal benefits, preserved service and monthly pension eligibility matters.
What Is the EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator?
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator is an educational tool for employees who have participated in the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. It helps identify the ordinary service and age conditions associated with receiving a monthly EPS pension.
EPS is administered through the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, commonly known as EPFO. It operates alongside the Employees' Provident Fund, but the two benefits are different. EPF is primarily a provident-fund savings arrangement, while EPS provides defined pension benefits subject to scheme rules.
For an eligible employee, part of the employer's provident-fund contribution is allocated toward EPS, normally subject to the applicable pensionable wage ceiling and membership conditions. Employees do not ordinarily make a separate direct EPS contribution from their salary.
Many workers discover the difference only when they leave employment or approach retirement. A substantial EPF balance does not automatically prove eligibility for a monthly EPS pension. The service record, membership status and pension provisions must be checked independently.
Who should use this checker?
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator is useful for employees approaching age 50 or 58, former employees reviewing pension rights, workers changing jobs and individuals considering an EPS withdrawal benefit or scheme certificate.
It is also useful when employment spans several organisations. Previous service may count when properly preserved and linked, but a gap in employment does not automatically become pensionable service. Check the consolidated record rather than adding every calendar year between your first and last jobs.
Use this tool as an initial decision aid, then verify your information using official EPFO records. An eligibility estimate is not a claim approval, and no on-page calculator can independently confirm an individual member's pension entitlement.
EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator: Service Requirements
Under the ordinary EPS pension provisions, at least ten years of eligible service is generally required for a monthly member pension. The service must be recognised under the scheme, and applicable rounding and past-service provisions can affect the final calculation.
EPS pensionable service is not necessarily identical to total professional experience. A person may have worked for twelve years but accumulated fewer than ten years of eligible EPS service because some employment was outside the scheme or because particular periods were not recognised.
How is pensionable service counted?
Eligible service is determined using the relevant contribution and service records. EPS rules provide for rounding of qualifying service fractions: a fraction of six months or more may be treated as a full year, while a smaller fraction may be ignored for the relevant calculation.
For example, nine years and seven months of otherwise recognised pensionable service may be rounded to ten years. Nine years and five months generally does not reach ten years through this rounding method. However, the actual EPFO service determination takes precedence over a manually entered number.
What happens with less than ten years?
Members leaving covered employment before satisfying the ordinary monthly pension service requirement may be eligible for an EPS withdrawal benefit, subject to the scheme's conditions. This benefit is not simply a refund of the employer's EPS contributions plus interest.
Another possibility is a scheme certificate that preserves recognised service for future pension purposes. The appropriate option depends on your circumstances, age, service history and the applicable EPS provisions.
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator therefore separates the ordinary pension-service benchmark from the question of whether a withdrawal benefit or preserved service may be relevant. It does not calculate a withdrawal amount or assume that every former member can claim one.
Combining service across employers
Changing jobs does not necessarily mean losing EPS pensionable service. Properly recorded earlier service can be carried forward and recognised when scheme conditions are met. This is particularly important for employees who have held several EPF-covered jobs.
Before making a retirement decision, compare the service history attached to your UAN and older member identifiers. If a previous employer's service is missing, investigate it through EPFO rather than entering the missing period as though it were already approved.
Our EPF transfer versus withdrawal guide provides related context for employees changing jobs. EPS service preservation should be considered separately from the transfer of an EPF account balance.
EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator: Age 50 and 58 Rules
Age is the second major element of ordinary EPS pension eligibility. A member with qualifying service can generally receive a normal superannuation pension from age 58, subject to the applicable scheme conditions.
EPS also provides for a reduced early pension from age 50 in qualifying circumstances. Early pension is not automatic merely because a member has reached age 50. Required service and exit conditions must also be satisfied.
Normal pension at age 58
Age 58 is the ordinary EPS superannuation pension age. Someone with the necessary recognised service who has reached that age may qualify for pension benefits under the relevant scheme provisions.
Members who have not yet reached 58 may have a preserved pension entitlement for a future start date. The fact that the service requirement has been met does not necessarily mean a pension is payable immediately.
Early pension from age 50
A reduced pension may be available to a qualifying member who exits covered employment after reaching age 50 but before age 58. Under the usual EPS early-pension provision, the pension is reduced by 4% for each year the commencement age falls short of 58.
For example, an otherwise qualifying member starting at age 55 is three years before 58. The illustrative reduction is 12%, leaving 88% of the unreduced pension amount. The actual calculation and eligibility must follow the rules applicable to the member.
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator identifies whether the entered age falls within the normal or early pension ranges. It does not assume that early pension can start while the member remains in EPS-covered employment.
Can a pension be deferred?
EPS contains provisions for deferring pension commencement beyond age 58 in eligible circumstances, generally up to age 60. The applicable treatment depends on whether the member continues contributing and satisfies the relevant requirements.
Deferral should not be treated as a universally available bonus. Review the specific provisions and your service status before deciding whether to start a pension at 58 or consider a later commencement date.
EPS Pension Formula and Practical Examples
The ordinary EPS monthly pension calculation is generally based on pensionable salary and pensionable service. For a standard formula-based case, monthly pension is calculated by multiplying pensionable salary by pensionable service and dividing the result by 70.
The pensionable salary figure is not automatically the employee's final basic salary or total CTC. Applicable wage ceilings, salary averaging rules, contribution history and approved higher-pension arrangements can affect the correct figure.
Example 1: Fifteen years of pensionable service
Suppose an eligible member has fifteen recognised years of pensionable service and an applicable pensionable salary of ₹15,000 per month. The standard illustrative formula produces ₹15,000 × 15 ÷ 70, or approximately ₹3,214 per month.
This amount is only a formula illustration. It does not include any special service additions, early pension reduction or individual adjustments that may be required under EPS.
Example 2: Twenty-five years of service
For the same assumed pensionable salary of ₹15,000 and twenty-five pensionable years, the basic formula gives approximately ₹5,357 per month. Additional qualifying service can increase the formula-based pension, subject to the scheme's detailed provisions.
In qualifying cases, EPS provides additional pensionable-service treatment for members with twenty or more years of service. A simplified example should not automatically add that benefit without checking the actual qualifying conditions.
Example 3: Early pension at age 55
Consider a member whose otherwise calculated monthly pension is ₹5,000. If the member qualifies to start an early pension at age 55 and the usual 4%-per-year reduction applies, the illustrative reduction is ₹600, leaving ₹4,400 per month.
These calculations explain the relationship between service, pensionable salary and pension commencement age. The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator on this page concentrates on eligibility rather than estimating a personal pension amount from incomplete payroll records.
Why higher-pension cases require separate checks
Some EPS members may have circumstances involving pension on higher wages, joint options or special contribution arrangements. Eligibility and calculations for those cases depend on applicable legal provisions, EPFO directions and individual records.
Do not assume that entering a higher basic salary automatically makes it the pensionable salary recognised by EPFO. An employer's salary certificate alone may not establish approval of a higher pension option.
How to Verify EPS Pension Eligibility
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator provides an initial assessment using information you supply. To make a real pension decision, you should compare the estimate with your official records and the current EPFO claim requirements.
- Confirm EPS membership. Check whether your employment and contribution records show participation in EPS, rather than assuming EPF membership always establishes it.
- Review service history. Identify all relevant member accounts, previous employers, joining dates, exit dates and any missing or disputed periods.
- Check preserved service. Locate any scheme certificate and confirm whether earlier pensionable service has been recognised.
- Identify the correct benefit. Determine whether normal pension, reduced pension, withdrawal benefit or another scheme provision is potentially applicable.
- Verify claim requirements. Consult the official EPFO portal and the applicable claim procedure before submitting documents or relying on a pension start date.

Common eligibility mistakes
One frequent mistake is counting every year of employment as EPS service. Another is assuming that withdrawing an EPF balance automatically settles or cancels every pension-related right. The provident-fund balance and EPS pension benefits have different rules.
Employees also sometimes overlook old member identifiers, scheme certificates, service rounding, early pension reductions and the distinction between leaving a job and becoming eligible for immediate pension payment.
Using the EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator alongside verified service records helps identify which questions need further investigation. It cannot resolve record discrepancies or substitute for an official EPFO determination.
Understand the Main EPS Pension Conditions.
The ordinary EPS rules connect recognised service with pension commencement age. Use the table as a practical reference, not as an exhaustive statement of every pension category.
The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator applies these general thresholds while keeping exceptional circumstances separate. Disability pension, family pension, earlier service provisions and approved special arrangements require additional examination.
In particular, a worker below the ordinary ten-year service benchmark should not assume there is no EPS-related benefit at all. Withdrawal benefits and scheme certificates may be relevant, depending on the applicable conditions.
| Condition | General treatment |
|---|---|
| Less than 10 qualifying years | Ordinary monthly pension service threshold not met; other benefits may apply |
| 10 qualifying years or more | Ordinary service benchmark generally met |
| Below age 50 | Normally too young for immediate member pension |
| Age 50–57 | Reduced early pension may apply after qualifying exit |
| Age 58 or older | Normal pension age reached |
| Permanent total disablement | Separate pension provisions may apply |
One Pension Scheme, Different Benefit Paths.
EPS provides several benefit categories. Which route applies depends on the member's service history, age, disability circumstances and surviving family members.

Frequently Asked Questions About EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator
Answers to common questions about pensionable service, retirement age and EPS benefit conditions.
01 Who is eligible for an EPS monthly pension? +
An ordinary EPS member pension generally requires at least ten years of qualifying pensionable service and satisfaction of the applicable age and other scheme conditions. Normal pension starts at age 58, while a reduced early pension may be available from age 50 following a qualifying exit.
02 Can I receive an EPS pension after nine years of service? +
It depends on the recognised service period. Applicable rounding rules may treat nine years and six months or more as ten years for the relevant calculation. Nine completed years alone generally does not establish ten years of qualifying service.
03 Can I start an EPS pension at age 50? +
A qualifying member may be eligible for reduced early pension from age 50 after exiting covered employment and satisfying the necessary service conditions. An early pension reduction normally applies. Age 50 by itself does not establish eligibility.
04 What happens if I have less than ten years of EPS service? +
A withdrawal benefit or scheme certificate may be relevant under the applicable EPS provisions. The correct option depends on membership, age, service and claim circumstances. An ordinary monthly member pension is generally not available without the required service.
05 Is EPS the same as EPF? +
No. EPF is a provident-fund savings arrangement, while EPS is a pension scheme. Their contributions, withdrawals, eligibility conditions and benefit calculations differ, even though they operate within the broader EPFO system.
06 Does previous employer service count toward EPS? +
Earlier qualifying service can count when properly preserved and recognised under the scheme. Members should verify linked accounts, service records and scheme certificates. The calculator cannot confirm whether a previous employer's service has been accepted.
07 Can I receive EPS pension while still working? +
The answer depends on age, employment status and the specific pension provisions. A reduced early pension normally requires qualifying exit from covered employment. Different conditions can apply at or after age 58, so verify the relevant scheme rules.
08 Does EPS provide disability pension? +
EPS includes separate provisions for permanent total disablement during covered service, subject to the scheme's conditions. Such cases should not be assessed solely through the ordinary ten-year service threshold or age-based pension rules.
09 Can family members receive EPS pension benefits? +
EPS includes family pension provisions for qualifying survivors, including eligible spouses and children. The applicable amount and conditions depend on the member's circumstances and the relevant scheme provisions.
10 How is the EPS pension amount calculated? +
The ordinary formula uses pensionable salary multiplied by pensionable service, divided by 70. Applicable salary ceilings, recognised service, early pension reductions and special provisions can affect the actual amount awarded.
11 Does the EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator access EPFO records? +
No. The EPS Pension Eligibility Calculator runs locally in your browser using the details you enter. It does not retrieve UAN information, verify contributions, submit claims or establish an official pension entitlement.
12 How can I confirm my pension eligibility officially? +
Review your EPFO membership and service records, any scheme certificates and the current pension claim requirements. Where records are incomplete or disputed, seek clarification through official EPFO channels before relying on an estimated benefit.
