Salary + Freelancing Tax Guide 2026–27 Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India
Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India helps employees with side projects estimate their combined income tax. Add salary and freelance earnings, account for eligible expenses, compare tax regimes, and understand the potential advance-tax obligation.
Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India
Enter your annual salary and freelance receipts. Choose actual business expenses or an eligible presumptive-income scenario, then calculate an illustrative combined tax liability.
This is an educational estimate. Actual return calculations, advance-tax instalments and refund eligibility require verification.
How To Use Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India
The calculation combines two income streams into one annual tax estimate. It does not treat freelance invoices as a second salary or assume that tax deducted by clients is the final liability.
| Step | Calculation |
|---|---|
| 1. Determine salary income | Start with gross salary and subtract the applicable standard deduction and permitted exemptions. |
| 2. Determine freelance profit | Subtract allowable business expenses, or apply an eligible presumptive taxation method. |
| 3. Calculate combined tax | Add taxable income, apply the chosen regime, rebate and cess, then subtract eligible TDS and credits. |
For a person earning both salary and professional income, income tax is generally calculated on combined taxable income, subject to the applicable rules. It is not sufficient to calculate tax separately on each income source and add the results, because slab rates apply to the total.
Use the Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India to model annual liability before deciding how much to reserve for tax. Compare the result with your employer's withholding, freelance-client TDS certificates and eligible advance-tax payments.
Understanding Salary And Freelance Income In India
A salaried employee may also earn money from consulting, software development, writing, design, teaching, professional services or independent projects. These additional earnings can create business or professional income, depending on the nature of the activity.
The Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India is intended for people who need to estimate income tax across these different sources. It is particularly useful when a company deducts TDS from salary while freelance clients separately deduct tax from invoices.
Salary income is not the same as CTC
Your employer's cost-to-company figure may contain employer provident fund, gratuity provisions, insurance and other noncash components. For this calculator, use annual gross salary relevant to your income-tax calculation rather than simply entering the full CTC.
The standard deduction is applied separately by the calculator according to the selected regime. Do not manually subtract it from the salary input. For understanding employer costs, see the Salary Breakup Calculator India.
Freelance receipts versus freelance profit
Freelance receipts represent amounts earned from clients before deductible business expenses. Profit is the amount remaining after allowable expenditure under the applicable method. A freelancer with ₹6 lakh in receipts and ₹1.2 lakh in eligible expenses may have ₹4.8 lakh in business profit.
However, the legal classification of the work matters. Not every independent contractor qualifies for the same presumptive tax scheme. Keep invoices, expense records, bank statements and withholding certificates so that the figures entered can be supported.
Income from investments, capital gains, rent and overseas sources may require additional schedules or special tax treatment. The basic calculator should not be used as a complete substitute for a tax return involving those categories.
Freelance Expenses, Deductions And Section 44ADA
The Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India offers an actual-profit method and a conditional Section 44ADA method. These are alternative calculations, not two deductions that can be claimed together on the same professional receipts.
Actual business expense method
Under the actual-profit method, qualifying business expenditure reduces freelance receipts to determine profit. Depending on the facts and applicable law, examples may include professional software subscriptions, business internet expenses, accounting fees and allowable equipment costs or depreciation.
Personal expenditure is not automatically deductible merely because a freelancer paid for it. Mixed personal and business expenditure may require allocation. Capital assets can also have different tax treatment from ordinary operating expenses.
Who may use Section 44ADA?
Section 44ADA is a presumptive taxation provision for specified eligible professions and taxpayers who meet its conditions. It is not a universal 50% deduction for every freelancer, creator, trader or independent worker.
For qualifying cases, presumptive professional income is generally calculated at 50% of eligible gross receipts or a higher declared amount. The applicable receipts ceiling and the enhanced limit depend on statutory conditions, including cash-receipt requirements.
The standard ceiling is ₹50 lakh, with an enhanced ₹75 lakh ceiling where the relevant cash-receipt condition is satisfied. Eligibility, taxpayer type, professional classification and other requirements must be checked independently.
If you select Section 44ADA, the calculator does not subtract separate professional expenses again. If you are unsure whether your services qualify, use the actual-profit option as a planning illustration and obtain appropriate tax advice.

Old Versus New Tax Regime For Combined Income
The tax regime affects how salary deductions, exemptions, rebates and slabs are applied. The new regime is the default for eligible individuals, while opting for the old regime may be possible subject to the applicable rules.
For FY 2026–27, the calculator uses a ₹75,000 salary standard deduction under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime. These deductions apply to qualifying salary income, not automatically to freelance professional profit.
New regime and Section 87A rebate
Under the applicable new-regime provisions, eligible resident individuals may receive a Section 87A rebate where ordinary taxable income does not exceed ₹12 lakh. The maximum ordinary-income rebate is ₹60,000, subject to statutory limitations.
Marginal relief may apply just above the qualifying income threshold. Special-rate income and certain other situations can change the calculation, so the rebate must not be treated as a universal exemption on all receipts or CTC.
Old regime and deductions
The old regime may permit qualifying deductions and exemptions that are generally unavailable under the new regime. These can include eligible investments, insurance contributions, HRA exemption and other deductions, subject to individual rules and limits.
The calculator provides an input for total eligible old-regime deductions. Enter only amounts you can lawfully claim. It does not independently verify Section 80C caps, HRA eligibility or other deduction-specific conditions.
Business or professional income can also affect the procedure and restrictions for changing regimes, including applicable filing requirements. Do not assume that the lower figure displayed can always be selected without procedural consequences.
Compare the outcomes using the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator and confirm your election requirements before filing.
Advance Tax, Salary TDS And Freelance Client TDS
The Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India subtracts entered TDS and tax credits from estimated annual liability. This produces a planning balance, not an official assessment of tax due or a guaranteed refund.
An employer generally estimates tax on salary and deducts TDS through payroll. Freelance clients may deduct TDS under provisions applicable to the nature of the payment, payer and contractual relationship.
Both withholding streams may be creditable against the same individual's final liability. Tax is not ordinarily charged twice simply because two different payers deducted TDS.
When advance tax may apply
Advance tax can become relevant when estimated tax liability remaining after eligible TDS and other qualifying credits meets the statutory threshold, generally ₹10,000. The normal instalment schedule for eligible taxpayers is cumulative 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% by the applicable June, September, December and March dates.
Eligible taxpayers declaring income under Section 44ADA may have a different payment pattern, generally requiring the full advance-tax amount by 15 March. Other exceptions and timing rules may apply.
Late or insufficient payments can result in interest under applicable provisions. The calculator does not calculate Sections 234B or 234C interest or determine individual instalment obligations.
Check your tax credits
Compare employer Form 16, relevant Form 16A certificates, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement with your own records. A credit entered into the calculator does not prove that the amount has been deposited or correctly reported.
For monthly salary withholding, use the Salary TDS Monthly Deduction Calculator. For general income-tax guidance, consult the official Income Tax Department website.
Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India Example
Consider a resident employee below age 60 who earns ₹12 lakh annual gross salary and receives ₹6 lakh from freelance assignments. Assume ₹1.2 lakh of allowable business expenses and no other taxable income.
Under the actual-profit method, freelance profit is ₹4.8 lakh. Combined income before the salary standard deduction is ₹16.8 lakh. The new-regime standard deduction of ₹75,000 produces taxable income of ₹16.05 lakh.
Applying the FY 2026–27 new-regime slabs gives income tax of ₹1,21,000 before cess. Health and Education Cess of 4% adds ₹4,840, producing total estimated tax of ₹1,25,840, assuming no special-rate income, surcharge or additional adjustments.
If salary TDS is ₹60,000 and freelance TDS is another ₹60,000, the remaining estimated liability is ₹5,840. This is only a worked illustration; actual withholding and filing details may change the result.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using annual CTC instead of the correct salary income figure.
- Applying the salary standard deduction to freelance profit.
- Deducting business expenses again under presumptive taxation.
- Assuming every freelance profession qualifies for Section 44ADA.
- Ignoring client TDS while calculating the remaining tax balance.
- Treating the annual tax estimate as an exact advance-tax instalment schedule.
Recalculate whenever your income changes substantially, particularly after a large client contract, a salary increase or a change in your eligible expenses.
New-Regime Income Tax Slabs For FY 2026–27
The progressive slabs below apply to ordinary taxable income under the new regime for the stated financial year. The calculator applies the applicable rebate and cess after calculating slab tax.
Taxable income is not the same as gross salary plus invoices. Standard deductions, allowable business expenses and other relevant adjustments can change the amount on which slab rates are calculated.
Always check official statutory guidance before making payments or filing returns.
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | 0% |
| ₹4,00,001 – ₹8,00,000 | 5% |
| ₹8,00,001 – ₹12,00,000 | 10% |
| ₹12,00,001 – ₹16,00,000 | 15% |
| ₹16,00,001 – ₹20,00,000 | 20% |
| ₹20,00,001 – ₹24,00,000 | 25% |
| Above ₹24,00,000 | 30% |
Three Records Worth Keeping.
Employees who freelance benefit from maintaining clear records for each income stream. These documents help reconcile earnings, deductions and tax credits at filing time.
01. Salary documents
Retain payslips, Form 16, employer tax declarations and annual compensation details. Check whether payroll withholding reflects your declared income.
02. Freelance accounts
Keep invoices, receipt confirmations, client contracts and evidence supporting deductible expenditure. Separate business transactions from personal spending.
03. Tax payment records
Reconcile Form 26AS, AIS, applicable TDS certificates and advance-tax challans. Investigate mismatches before relying on credits.

Frequently Asked Questions About Salary And Freelance Tax
Answers to common questions about combined earnings, presumptive taxation, withholding and filing obligations.
01 Can I earn salary and freelance income simultaneously?+
Yes, subject to your employment contract, applicable laws and conflict-of-interest obligations. Both income streams generally need to be considered when calculating annual income tax. The Freelance Plus Salary Income Tax Calculator India combines them for an illustrative estimate.
02 Is freelance income taxed separately from salary?+
Ordinary taxable salary and business or professional income are generally aggregated for the individual's tax calculation. Their deductions and reporting rules can differ, but slab rates ordinarily apply to combined taxable income.
03 Does Section 44ADA apply to every freelancer?+
No. Section 44ADA applies to specified eligible professions and taxpayers satisfying statutory requirements. Freelancing by itself does not establish eligibility. Confirm the professional classification, receipts limit and other conditions.
04 Can I claim expenses under Section 44ADA?+
The presumptive calculation generally incorporates allowable professional expenses within the deemed-profit mechanism. You cannot simply subtract the same expenses again from presumptive income. Special rules and consequences can apply when declaring lower income.
05 Is freelance TDS my final income tax?+
No. Client TDS is generally a credit toward final liability. The amount due depends on total taxable income, the selected tax regime, eligible adjustments and other tax payments.
06 Do salaried freelancers need to pay advance tax?+
Potentially. Advance tax may apply when the estimated liability after eligible credits reaches the statutory threshold. Payment schedules and exceptions depend on circumstances, including whether qualifying presumptive taxation applies.
07 Which ITR form applies to salary plus freelancing?+
ITR-3 or ITR-4 may be relevant depending on the nature of business or professional income, presumptive taxation eligibility, residency and other conditions. ITR-4 is not universally available. Check the official return instructions for the assessment year.
08 Can I choose the old regime if I have freelance income?+
Possibly, but taxpayers with business or professional income can face additional election requirements and restrictions on switching regimes. Review the applicable Form 10-IEA rules and filing deadlines before deciding.
09 Does the ₹12 lakh rebate threshold include freelance profit?+
Eligible ordinary freelance profit forms part of total taxable income for determining rebate eligibility. The threshold is not a separate ₹12 lakh allowance for salary and another for freelance income. Special-rate income and other conditions matter.
10 Can the calculator determine my exact refund?+
No. It can show potential excess entered credits over estimated liability, but an actual refund depends on verified credits, correct return information, statutory adjustments and processing by the tax authorities.
