01 THE BASICS

Old Tax Regime vs New Tax Regime in India

India's two personal income tax regimes calculate tax using different slab rates and deduction rules. The old regime generally permits a broader range of eligible exemptions and deductions, while the new regime offers revised progressive slabs with fewer traditional tax benefits.

The Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator evaluates both systems against the same income information. This helps you distinguish a lower slab rate from a lower final tax bill. A regime with attractive rates is not necessarily best for every taxpayer.

What makes the new regime different?

For FY 2026–27, the new regime uses seven progressive tax bands, beginning with a zero-rate band up to ₹4 lakh. Eligible salaried individuals can claim a ₹75,000 standard deduction. The Section 87A rebate can reduce tax on qualifying ordinary taxable income up to ₹12 lakh to zero.

The new regime is the default tax regime for eligible individuals, but choosing or switching regimes can involve different rules depending on the presence of business or professional income. Review the old versus new tax regime guide for the broader distinction.

Why does the old regime still matter?

The old regime may remain useful for taxpayers with substantial eligible deductions. These can include Section 80C investments, qualifying medical insurance, housing-loan interest, HRA exemption and certain retirement contributions. Each benefit has conditions, caps and documentation requirements.

Someone paying substantial rent and making qualifying investments may have a much lower old-regime taxable income than their new-regime taxable income. The Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator is designed to show whether those reductions are enough to offset the difference in slab rates.

Important distinction: Lower taxable income does not automatically mean lower final tax. Compare the calculated tax after slabs, rebates and cess, not only the deduction total.

02 FIVE SMART STEPS

5 Smart Steps to Compare Your Tax Savings

Use these five steps with the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator to make a consistent comparison. Accurate inputs matter more than selecting the regime that appears popular among colleagues or online discussions.

1. Start with your correct annual income

Enter your annual gross salary before the standard deduction. Do not automatically use your headline CTC because CTC may include employer provident fund contributions, gratuity provisions and other employer costs that are not ordinary gross salary.

2. Add eligible ordinary income

Include relevant interest or other ordinary taxable income that belongs in the comparison. Income taxed at special rates, such as certain capital gains, needs separate treatment and is not supported by this simplified calculator.

3. Enter only eligible old-regime deductions

Check actual investments, medical insurance, housing benefits and retirement contributions. Do not enter the maximum available deduction merely because a tax provision allows it. The claim must be supported by your circumstances and relevant documentation.

4. Compare tax after rebates and cess

The Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator applies the different tax slabs, eligible simplified rebates and 4% health and education cess. This produces an estimated annual tax amount for each regime rather than comparing gross income or deduction totals alone.

5. Review the decision before filing

Use the lower estimated liability as a starting point, then check income type, residency, employer declarations and applicable election rules. For salary withholding, review the monthly TDS calculator and reconcile the eventual return against your supporting records.

These steps are particularly useful when comparing an employment offer, reviewing a salary revision or deciding whether to continue tax-saving investments. Tax efficiency should be evaluated alongside liquidity, investment risk and long-term financial goals.

03 DEDUCTIONS

Tax Deductions That Can Change the Comparison

The Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator provides separate fields for common old-regime deductions. The amount entered should represent an eligible claim, not merely an expense you incurred during the year.

Section 80C investments

Eligible contributions and payments under Section 80C may include EPF, PPF, qualifying life insurance premiums, ELSS investments and certain principal repayments. The combined deduction is generally capped at ₹1,50,000, subject to the applicable conditions.

Employee EPF contributions may already form part of the 80C amount. Do not add the same EPF contribution again as another deduction. The EPF employee contribution calculator can help you understand the contribution component.

Section 80D medical insurance

Medical insurance deductions depend on who is insured, age-related limits, payment conditions and qualifying expenses. The calculator accepts an eligible amount but does not independently verify each Section 80D condition. Review the applicable statutory limit before entering a claim.

HRA and housing-loan interest

House Rent Allowance exemption under the old regime depends on actual HRA received, rent paid, qualifying salary and the prescribed city category. It is not automatically equal to rent paid. Calculate the eligible amount first using the HRA calculator.

Housing-loan interest deductions depend on the property type, ownership, use, applicable limits and other conditions. This tool models a simplified eligible self-occupied-property amount of up to ₹2 lakh. More complex property-income cases need separate calculations.

NPS and other qualifying deductions

An additional qualifying contribution under Section 80CCD(1B) may be deductible up to ₹50,000 under the old regime. Employer NPS contributions follow different provisions and should not be confused with this personal contribution field.

Some employer contributions can also qualify under the new regime subject to applicable rules. The calculator does not model employer NPS contribution deductions separately. Use the NPS retirement corpus calculator for longer-term retirement projections.

Professional tax paid by an employee may also reduce salary income under the old regime. Its amount varies by state and payroll circumstances. Verify the actual deduction rather than assuming the same amount applies across India.

04 WORKED EXAMPLES

Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator Examples

Worked examples help explain why the same income can produce different results. The following illustrations use FY 2026–27 rules, resident-individual assumptions, ordinary salary income and no surcharge or special-rate income.

Example 1: ₹12 lakh gross salary

Assume an employee earns ₹12,00,000 in annual gross salary. Under the new regime, the ₹75,000 standard deduction produces taxable income of ₹11,25,000. For an eligible resident individual with only ordinary income, the Section 87A rebate reduces the calculated income tax to zero.

Under the old regime, assume only the ₹50,000 standard deduction and no other deductions. Taxable income becomes ₹11,50,000. The calculated tax, including 4% cess, is ₹1,63,800. In this example, the new regime provides an estimated saving of ₹1,63,800.

Example 2: ₹15 lakh gross salary

At ₹15,00,000 gross salary, the new-regime taxable income after the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹14,25,000. Progressive slab tax is ₹93,750 before cess, resulting in ₹97,500 after 4% cess, assuming no additional relief applies.

Under the old regime, if only the ₹50,000 standard deduction applies, taxable income is ₹14,50,000. The estimated tax including cess is ₹2,57,400. The new regime therefore produces ₹1,59,900 less tax in this particular example.

Example 3: ₹20 lakh salary with deductions

Suppose gross salary is ₹20,00,000 and eligible old-regime deductions and exemptions total ₹5,00,000 in addition to the ₹50,000 standard deduction. Old-regime taxable income is ₹14,50,000, producing estimated tax of ₹2,57,400 including cess.

The new-regime taxable income is ₹19,25,000 after its ₹75,000 standard deduction. Estimated tax is ₹1,90,000 before cess, or ₹1,97,600 including cess. The new regime is lower by ₹59,800 under these assumptions.

These examples do not establish a universal winner. Larger eligible deductions, different income components or circumstances outside the calculator can change the result. Use the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator with your own figures instead of copying a sample outcome.

05 CHECK YOUR ASSUMPTIONS

Common Tax Comparison Mistakes and Limitations

The Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator is an educational planning tool. It cannot determine every statutory adjustment that may apply to a tax return, particularly where multiple income categories, special-rate provisions or complex deductions are involved.

Confusing CTC with taxable salary

A compensation package can include employer costs that are not equivalent to salary received. Begin with the actual taxable salary components shown in your payroll records. The salary breakup calculator helps separate compensation components.

Claiming deductions twice

A common error is entering EPF within Section 80C and again under other deductions. Similarly, HRA exemption should be the eligible calculated exemption rather than total rent. Double-counting artificially lowers the estimated old-regime tax.

Ignoring marginal relief and rebate rules

Section 87A is not a universal exemption from tax for every type of income. The new-regime rebate applies under specific conditions, and special-rate income may remain taxable. Marginal relief can matter immediately above the qualifying ordinary-income threshold.

Ignoring surcharge at higher incomes

The calculator deliberately excludes surcharge. Consequently, higher-income comparisons can understate actual liability. Additional rules may also apply to very high incomes, including surcharge-related marginal relief and limits on deductions.

Assuming payroll TDS is final tax

Monthly TDS reflects withholding estimates. Final liability depends on the completed tax-year information and the applicable return rules. Other income, tax credits and revised declarations can change the final figure.

Before choosing: Review your Form 16, investment evidence, HRA calculation, other income and regime eligibility. Use official tax guidance or qualified professional advice when the comparison involves complex income or substantial amounts.

Income Tax Slabs for FY 2026–27

The new-regime progressive slabs below are used by the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator for ordinary taxable income. Each rate applies only to the portion of taxable income falling within its band.

Under the new regime, eligible resident individuals may receive Section 87A rebate relief on ordinary taxable income up to ₹12 lakh, subject to the statutory rules. Salaried individuals may also qualify for the ₹75,000 standard deduction.

The old regime uses its separate progressive slabs and generally permits more qualifying deductions. This calculator uses old-regime rates applicable to individuals below 60.

QUICK ANSWERS / 07

Frequently Asked Questions About Tax Regime Savings

These answers address common questions about using the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator and interpreting its results.

01 What is the Tax Regime Savings Comparison Calculator?+

It is an interactive tool that estimates annual income tax under India's old and new regimes using your income and eligible deductions. It compares the resulting liabilities and displays the estimated difference. Results are educational and do not replace a complete tax return calculation.

02 Which tax regime is better for ₹12 lakh salary?+

For an eligible resident salaried individual with ₹12 lakh ordinary gross salary, the new regime can result in zero tax after the standard deduction and qualifying Section 87A rebate. The old-regime result depends on eligible deductions. The comparison should use actual taxable income, not CTC alone.

03 Is the new regime always better?+

No. Although revised new-regime slabs can produce lower tax in many circumstances, substantial eligible old-regime deductions may change the outcome. Compare final estimated liabilities after applying each regime's rules rather than relying on a universal recommendation.

04 Can I claim Section 80C in the new regime?+

Most traditional Section 80C deductions are not available under the new regime. Qualifying claims may remain available under the old regime, subject to the combined statutory limit and eligibility rules.

05 Does the calculator include the ₹75,000 standard deduction?+

Yes. The salary model includes the ₹75,000 new-regime standard deduction and the ₹50,000 old-regime standard deduction, each limited to available salary income. Other income does not automatically receive the salary standard deduction.

06 How does Section 87A affect tax savings?+

Eligible resident individuals can receive a rebate under the relevant regime and income conditions. Under the new regime for FY 2026–27, ordinary taxable income up to ₹12 lakh can qualify for rebate relief. Special-rate income and other statutory restrictions require separate consideration.

07 Does this tool calculate HRA automatically?+

No. Enter the eligible HRA exemption after calculating it from actual HRA, rent paid, qualifying salary and applicable city classification. This avoids incorrectly treating all rent as exempt income. Use the dedicated HRA calculator for that calculation.

08 Is professional tax deductible in both regimes?+

Professional tax paid on employment can generally be considered in computing salary income under the old regime. The simplified model does not deduct it under the new regime. Verify the amount using your payslip and applicable state rules.

09 Does the calculator include health and education cess?+

Yes. It applies 4% health and education cess to the estimated income tax after applicable simplified rebate and relief adjustments. Surcharge is not included, so high-income results need additional verification.

10 Can I switch between the old and new tax regimes?+

Regime selection and switching rules depend partly on whether you have business or professional income. Salaried taxpayers without such income generally have greater flexibility when filing returns. Check the applicable election requirements before making a decision.

11 Why does my Form 16 show a different tax amount?+

Your employer may use different income declarations, bonus assumptions, withholding adjustments or eligible deductions. Final tax can also involve other income, tax credits, special-rate income and rules not modelled here. Reconcile the result against your actual tax records.

12 Is the calculator suitable for all taxpayers?+

No. The current model focuses on resident individuals below 60 with ordinary income. Senior-citizen old-regime slabs, surcharge, special-rate income, agricultural-income integration, complex property cases and business-income restrictions require more detailed calculations.
