Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net helps you estimate the salary that actually reaches your bank account after employee provident fund, professional tax and income-tax deductions. Enter your gross salary or annual CTC to understand monthly take-home pay and compare tax regimes.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net: Estimate Your Pay
Enter your compensation details to calculate estimated monthly take-home salary. Choose gross salary when you know your earnings before employee deductions, or CTC when your offer states the employer's annual compensation cost.
Annual tax is allocated evenly across twelve months for estimation. Actual payroll TDS and bonus withholding may differ.

What Is Gross Salary and Net Salary in India?
Gross salary is the amount earned before employee deductions. It can include basic salary, house rent allowance, special allowances and other cash earnings. Net salary, often called in-hand salary or take-home pay, is the amount left after applicable payroll deductions and income-tax withholding.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net is useful when reviewing a job offer, checking a payslip, preparing a household budget or comparing two salary packages. The main purpose is to distinguish the compensation shown in an offer from the amount regularly deposited into a bank account.
Gross salary versus CTC
Cost to Company, or CTC, describes the employer's compensation cost. It can include gross cash salary along with employer PF, gratuity provisions, insurance premiums, performance incentives and other benefits. These employer costs are not necessarily cash paid to the employee each month.
For example, an annual CTC of ₹12 lakh may contain employer provident fund contributions and a performance bonus. If those items are included in CTC, the regular monthly gross salary will be lower than ₹1 lakh. The exact difference depends on the offer's component-wise breakdown.
Why in-hand salary matters
Monthly take-home salary is especially important for budgeting rent, loan repayments, savings and everyday expenses. A headline package can look attractive while providing less predictable monthly cash than expected. Fixed net pay offers a more practical basis for recurring financial commitments.
The calculator separates regular fixed salary from variable compensation. It also distinguishes employer contributions from employee deductions. This prevents a common error: subtracting the same provident fund contribution twice when converting CTC into take-home salary.
Before relying on a result, collect your salary breakup. Identify annual gross cash compensation, employee PF, employer PF, professional tax, variable pay and any other deductions. The more closely your inputs match the payslip, the more useful the estimate becomes.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net Formula
The basic gross-to-net salary calculation subtracts employee payroll deductions and estimated income-tax withholding from gross cash earnings. When the starting amount is CTC, employer-funded costs must first be removed to determine the relevant gross salary.
| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Annual gross from CTC | CTC − employer costs included in CTC |
| Fixed annual gross | Annual gross − annual variable pay |
| Fixed monthly gross | Fixed annual gross ÷ 12 |
| Monthly net salary | Fixed monthly gross − employee PF − professional tax − estimated TDS |
| Annual net income | Annual gross − employee PF − professional tax − estimated annual income tax |
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net uses this sequence rather than assuming every employee takes home a fixed percentage of gross salary. A percentage shortcut ignores tax slabs, provident fund methods, professional tax and the timing of variable compensation.
The calculation assumes twelve equal monthly fixed-pay periods. Actual payroll may differ because of unpaid leave, joining or exit dates, arrears, reimbursements, bonus payments or adjustments made by the employer. Those circumstances require additional payslip information.
How employer PF affects CTC
Employer provident fund can be included within CTC without being deducted from gross salary again. Employee provident fund, by contrast, is generally deducted from gross earnings. Both contributions may be calculated using a qualifying wage base, subject to applicable rules and employer arrangements.
The workbench supports a ₹15,000 monthly contribution base, full-basic contribution and no-PF scenario. It uses 12% as the model contribution rate. Select the method consistent with your actual payroll instead of assuming the capped option applies universally.
How to Calculate Net Salary in 5 Easy Steps
Use the following five-step process to calculate your expected salary credit. These steps work for most straightforward salaried employment examples, although special allowances, other income and employer-specific benefits can require more detailed treatment.
- Identify gross salary. Start with annual or monthly gross cash earnings. If you only have CTC, remove employer-funded costs included in the quoted package.
- Separate fixed and variable pay. Exclude annual incentives from the amount you expect to receive every regular month.
- Calculate employee deductions. Identify employee PF, professional tax and any additional applicable payroll deductions.
- Estimate annual income tax. Apply the relevant tax regime, standard deduction and eligible exemptions or deductions, then estimate payroll TDS.
- Find monthly net pay. Subtract monthly employee deductions and estimated TDS from fixed monthly gross salary.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net follows these five steps automatically after you enter the relevant inputs. The result panel displays annual gross salary, fixed monthly gross, employee PF, professional tax, estimated TDS and annual net income.
For an accurate comparison, use the same assumptions across job offers. Compare the fixed cash component first, then consider bonus eligibility, employer contributions and non-cash benefits separately. An offer with higher CTC does not automatically deliver higher monthly take-home pay.
Which salary amount should you enter?
Choose annual gross when you know your total cash earnings before employee deductions. Choose annual CTC when you know only the employer's quoted package, and enter employer-only costs. Choose monthly gross when you want to calculate take-home from an existing payslip.
Do not enter net salary as gross salary. Doing so would subtract deductions from an amount that has already been reduced. Likewise, avoid including reimbursements that are paid only when qualifying expenses are incurred unless they are part of the cash salary being modelled.
Gross to Net Salary Examples in India
Worked examples make the gross-to-net calculation easier to understand. The following scenarios are illustrations rather than universal take-home salary amounts. Actual results depend on the tax regime, eligible deductions, state professional tax and the employee's provident fund arrangements.
Example 1: ₹6 lakh annual gross salary
Suppose annual gross salary is ₹6,00,000, with no variable pay. Monthly gross is ₹50,000. If employee PF is ₹1,800 and professional tax is ₹200 per month, the monthly amount before income-tax withholding is ₹48,000.
Under the model's new-regime assumptions, ordinary taxable salary after the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹5,25,000. An eligible resident individual may receive a Section 87A rebate that eliminates the calculated ordinary-income tax. The illustrative monthly net is therefore ₹48,000.
Example 2: ₹12 lakh annual gross salary
Suppose annual gross salary is ₹12,00,000, with no variable pay, employee PF of ₹1,800 monthly and no professional tax. Fixed monthly gross salary is ₹1,00,000. Annual taxable ordinary income after the new-regime standard deduction is ₹11,25,000.
Under the stated resident-individual assumptions, the eligible rebate can eliminate ordinary-income tax at that taxable-income level. The resulting monthly net estimate is ₹98,200. This example excludes special-rate income, additional deductions, other employer costs and other payroll adjustments.
Example 3: ₹18 lakh annual gross salary
For annual gross salary of ₹18,00,000, fixed monthly gross is ₹1,50,000 when no variable compensation is included. With capped employee PF of ₹1,800 and professional tax of ₹200, the amount before TDS is ₹1,48,000 per month.
Under the model's new-regime assumptions, annual taxable ordinary income is ₹17,25,000. Progressive slab tax is ₹1,45,000 before 4% health and education cess, giving ₹1,50,800 annual tax. Estimated monthly TDS is ₹12,566.67, leaving approximately ₹1,35,433 in monthly net pay.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net can recalculate each scenario using full-basic PF, a different professional tax amount or the old regime. The examples show why the difference between gross and net is not constant across income levels.
PF, Professional Tax and Other Salary Deductions
Employee deductions reduce the amount credited to your bank account. Some deductions are statutory, while others arise from employee elections, company policy or benefit arrangements. Review each line separately instead of assuming that every deduction is income tax.
Employee Provident Fund
Employee PF is generally calculated as a percentage of qualifying wages. The commonly used contribution rate is 12%, although the wage base and applicable statutory conditions matter. A contribution calculated on ₹15,000 per month is ₹1,800 at that rate.
Some employers calculate contributions on a higher qualifying wage base. This can increase employee PF deductions while also increasing retirement savings. The net salary calculator allows you to compare the capped-base and full-basic-pay assumptions.
Professional tax
Professional tax is determined by applicable state rules. It is not charged uniformly throughout India. Some states have different salary bands, collection schedules and exemptions, while others do not levy it in the same way.
Enter the professional tax shown on your payslip or the amount verified for your employment location. The tool does not automatically determine state liability, so leaving the field at zero is appropriate only when that assumption matches your circumstances.
Other deductions
Employee State Insurance, labour welfare fund contributions, loan repayments, voluntary provident fund and certain benefit deductions can also affect salary credit. These are not automatically deducted in this simplified calculator. Account for them separately when reconciling the estimate with actual payroll.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net focuses on the major configurable deductions rather than claiming to reproduce every employer's payroll engine. When the calculated result differs from a payslip, inspect unmodelled deductions and the employer's income-tax withholding adjustments first.
Old Versus New Tax Regime for Net Salary
Income tax is often the largest variable in the difference between gross and net salary. India offers an old-regime framework with specified exemptions and deductions and a new-regime framework with different slab rates and more limited deductions.
The new-regime model applies a ₹75,000 standard deduction for eligible salaried individuals. The old-regime model applies a ₹50,000 standard deduction and permits user-entered eligible deductions and qualifying HRA exemption. Actual eligibility must be checked against applicable provisions.
Section 87A rebate
For eligible resident individuals with ordinary taxable income up to ₹12 lakh under the new-regime rules used here, the Section 87A rebate may reduce calculated ordinary-income tax to zero. Marginal relief can apply just above the threshold. The rebate is not a universal exemption for every type of income.
CTC is not the same as taxable income. Employer costs, the standard deduction, exemptions and other eligible adjustments may change the taxable amount. Special-rate income, surcharge, additional income and other tax situations are outside this simplified salary-only model.
HRA under the old regime
House Rent Allowance exemption depends on actual HRA received, eligible rent paid, salary as defined by the applicable rule and the qualifying city category. The calculation generally considers the least of actual HRA, rent exceeding 10% of qualifying salary, and 40% or 50% of qualifying salary.
The workbench uses basic pay as its simplified qualifying salary base. If your compensation includes relevant dearness allowance or other components, a more detailed HRA calculation is required. Ordinary HRA exemption is generally unavailable under the new regime.
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net displays an estimated annual tax under both regimes, allowing you to compare their effect. A lower tax estimate is not automatically proof of your legally available election; verify deductions, eligibility and employer declarations.
New-Regime Income-Tax Slabs for FY 2026–27
The following progressive tax bands are used in the calculator's ordinary-income model. Only the portion of taxable income falling within each band is taxed at that band's rate.
The eligible Section 87A rebate and applicable cess are considered separately. The simplified calculator excludes surcharge, special-rate income and several other statutory exceptions.
Always confirm current provisions through the Income Tax Department before using an estimate for a formal tax decision.
| Income slab | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4,00,000 | 0% |

Common Gross-to-Net Salary Mistakes
Even a correctly calculated formula can produce a misleading result when the starting salary or deduction assumptions are wrong.
| Mistake | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Using CTC as gross salary | Remove employer-funded costs included in CTC first. |
| Subtracting employer PF twice | Keep employer PF and employee PF separate. |
| Counting bonus as fixed pay | Exclude variable compensation from regular monthly take-home. |
| Using a universal professional tax | Check the applicable state and payroll amount. |
| Assuming every deduction is allowed | Verify eligibility and statutory limits under the selected tax regime. |
| Expecting identical TDS every month | Allow for employer adjustments, bonuses and changes in declarations. |
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net is most useful when paired with an actual salary breakup. Compare its result with a payslip, then investigate any difference rather than automatically treating the calculator or employer payroll as incorrect.
One Salary, Different Payroll Conditions.
Work location can affect professional tax, housing costs and eligible HRA assumptions. The same gross salary does not necessarily produce identical net pay for employees in different states or under different payroll structures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about converting gross salary into take-home pay in India.
01 — What does Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net calculate?
Net Salary Calculator India – Gross to Net estimates monthly fixed take-home pay from annual gross salary, monthly gross salary or CTC. It considers selected provident fund assumptions, professional tax, income-tax regime and variable compensation.
02 — What is the difference between gross and net salary?
Gross salary is cash compensation before employee deductions. Net salary is the amount remaining after deductions such as employee PF, professional tax and income-tax withholding.
03 — How much is ₹50,000 gross salary in hand?
With ₹1,800 employee PF, ₹200 professional tax and no income-tax withholding, ₹50,000 monthly gross produces approximately ₹48,000 take-home. Other deductions can change the result.
04 — Is net salary the same as CTC?
No. CTC includes the employer's compensation costs, which may contain non-cash benefits and employer contributions. Net salary is the amount paid after employee deductions.
05 — Does PF reduce in-hand salary?
Employee PF reduces monthly take-home pay because it is deducted from gross earnings. Employer PF included in CTC can also reduce the cash gross component of the quoted package.
06 — Is professional tax applicable throughout India?
No. Professional tax depends on the relevant state rules, exemptions and salary bands. Use the applicable amount from your payroll or an official state source.
07 — Which tax regime gives higher net salary?
The answer depends on taxable income and available deductions. The new regime can be advantageous for employees with limited eligible deductions, while the old regime may benefit some employees with substantial qualifying exemptions and deductions.
08 — Can I calculate monthly net salary from annual CTC?
Yes, provided you account for employer-funded costs included in CTC, variable pay and employee deductions. Enter annual CTC and the applicable compensation components into the calculator.
09 — Why is my actual payslip different from the calculator?
Differences may arise from payroll adjustments, additional benefits, ESI, labour welfare deductions, other income declarations, bonus timing, unpaid leave or employer-specific tax withholding.
10 — Is ₹12 lakh salary tax-free under the new regime?
Not automatically. Rebate eligibility depends on ordinary taxable income and applicable conditions. CTC and gross salary are not necessarily taxable income, and special-rate income may be treated differently.
11 — Can the calculator include bonus income?
Yes. Enter annual variable pay separately. The calculator excludes that amount from fixed monthly gross salary but includes it in the annual income and tax model.
12 — Is the calculator suitable for a final tax return?
No. It is a simplified salary-planning tool. Final tax liability can require consideration of other income, deductions, surcharge, special-rate income, employer adjustments and return-specific rules.
