4 LPA Salary In-Hand: Monthly Take-Home Calculator 2026 — Worked Example

Here is a practical salary estimate for someone receiving a ₹4,00,000 annual CTC offer. It shows why simply dividing the annual package by twelve can overstate the amount deposited into your bank account.

Illustrative 4 LPA salary breakup with capped PF
Salary component Annual amount Monthly equivalent
Total CTC ₹4,00,000 ₹33,333.33
Employer PF included in CTC ₹21,600 ₹1,800
Gross cash salary ₹3,78,400 ₹31,533.33
Employee PF deduction ₹21,600 ₹1,800
Professional tax ₹0 ₹0
Income tax ₹0 ₹0
Estimated in-hand salary ₹3,56,800 ₹29,733.33
This example assumes a 40% basic-pay share of CTC, capped employee and employer PF of ₹1,800 each per month, no bonus, no professional tax and no other employer-funded CTC components. It is not a universal payslip.

Quick answer: A ₹4 lakh annual CTC can produce approximately ₹29,733 per month under the assumptions above. If the employer does not include employer PF in CTC, the estimated monthly bank credit increases. Actual professional tax and other deductions may reduce it.

For this worked example, annual gross cash salary is ₹4,00,000 minus ₹21,600 of employer PF. Employee PF is then deducted from gross salary, not from CTC a second time. The remaining ₹3,56,800 is divided by twelve to calculate estimated recurring monthly take-home.

THE CALCULATION METHOD / 04

How To Calculate Your 4 LPA Monthly In-Hand Salary

The monthly salary calculation begins with the employer's annual compensation cost. You first remove employer-funded components included in CTC, then subtract employee payroll deductions from the resulting cash salary.

Annual gross cash pay = annual CTC − employer-funded costs included in CTC.

Monthly fixed gross = (annual gross cash pay − annual variable pay) ÷ 12.

Monthly in-hand = monthly fixed gross − employee PF − professional tax − estimated monthly TDS − other applicable employee deductions.

Use the actual employer contribution, bonus and benefit amounts when available. The calculator models employer PF but does not automatically deduct gratuity, insurance or every possible company benefit.

What Does a 4 LPA Salary Actually Mean?

A 4 LPA salary means an annual package of four lakh rupees. In Indian recruitment, the figure often refers to cost to company, commonly abbreviated as CTC. It does not necessarily mean that the employee receives the entire amount as cash compensation.

The employer may include its provident fund contribution, gratuity provision, insurance premiums and performance-related incentives in the quoted figure. These amounts can be valuable parts of employment compensation, but they are not necessarily credited to the employee's bank account every month.

CTC, gross salary and net salary

CTC describes the employer's total planned compensation cost. Gross salary describes earnings before employee-side deductions. Net salary, also called in-hand or take-home pay, is the cash remaining after deductions such as employee PF, professional tax and income-tax withholding.

These distinctions matter when evaluating a first job or a new offer. A candidate who divides ₹4,00,000 by twelve may expect approximately ₹33,333 per month. That figure is only the monthly equivalent of annual CTC, not a guaranteed net salary.

For the example above, monthly gross cash pay is approximately ₹31,533, and estimated monthly take-home is ₹29,733. The difference comes from employer PF included in CTC and employee PF deducted from gross pay. The result changes when the payroll structure changes.

Why two 4 LPA offers may pay differently

One employer may calculate PF on a capped wage base while another contributes on full basic pay. One may include insurance and gratuity provisions in CTC, while another may keep those costs outside the quoted salary. The same annual headline can therefore represent different amounts of recurring cash.

Variable pay is another important distinction. A package containing ₹40,000 in annual performance incentives does not necessarily provide that amount as guaranteed monthly salary. Bonuses may depend on performance, employment conditions, company results or payout schedules.

Before accepting an offer, request a written component-wise breakup. The CTC versus gross salary guide explains the difference, while the salary breakup calculator helps you examine individual components.

03 PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS

Provident Fund and Professional Tax on 4 LPA

Provident fund is one of the most common reasons for a difference between advertised salary and monthly bank credit. Employee PF and employer PF are separate contributions, even when their numerical amounts happen to be equal.

For an eligible employee under the standard contribution arrangement, the employee contribution is generally 12% of applicable PF wages. The employer also contributes under the applicable EPF and pension arrangements. The precise treatment depends on wage definitions, statutory requirements and the employer's contribution policy.

Example: capped provident fund

If the applicable contribution wage base is ₹15,000 per month, 12% equals ₹1,800. Employee PF of ₹1,800 reduces monthly gross salary. If employer PF of ₹1,800 is already included in annual CTC, it also reduces the cash salary derived from that CTC.

The two adjustments occur at different stages. Employer PF is removed when converting CTC into cash gross salary, while employee PF is removed when converting gross salary into in-hand salary. Treating both as employee deductions from gross pay would misstate the result.

Example: provident fund on full basic pay

Suppose basic pay is 40% of ₹4,00,000, giving ₹1,60,000 annually or approximately ₹13,333 monthly. A 12% contribution on that basic amount is ₹1,600 per month, assuming the basic amount is the applicable PF wage base.

Under that simplified scenario, employer PF and employee PF would each be ₹19,200 annually. If employer PF is included in CTC, the resulting estimated monthly in-hand salary is ₹30,133 before professional tax and other deductions.

This illustrates why a wage-ceiling assumption should not automatically be used for every employee. For official contribution information, consult the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation.

Does professional tax reduce 4 LPA take-home?

Professional tax is a state-level levy rather than a uniform national deduction. The amount can depend on the employee's location, earnings, applicable state legislation and payroll month. Some employees may have no professional tax deduction, while others may see a regular amount on their payslip.

For example, if professional tax is ₹200 per month, the original ₹29,733 estimate becomes approximately ₹29,533, assuming the other components remain unchanged. The calculator allows you to enter your actual monthly professional tax rather than imposing a single nationwide rate.

Other deductions may include labour welfare contributions, employee insurance contributions, salary advances or voluntary benefits. They are not all modelled automatically. Use the payslip deduction breakdown calculator to investigate differences between an estimate and actual payroll.

04 INCOME TAX

Income Tax on 4 LPA Salary in FY 2026–27

Income tax is calculated on taxable income, not directly on the CTC quoted in an employment offer. Taxable income can differ from annual CTC because of employer-funded costs, permitted standard deductions, exemptions and other qualifying adjustments.

For the illustrative ₹4 lakh CTC example, annual cash gross salary is ₹3,78,400. Under the new regime, the salaried standard deduction of ₹75,000 produces estimated taxable salary income of ₹3,03,400, assuming there is no additional income.

That amount falls within the zero-rate band of the new-regime slab structure. Consequently, the estimated annual income tax in this example is zero. The monthly bank credit is still lower than monthly CTC because PF contributions remain relevant even when income tax is zero.

What happens under the old tax regime?

Under the old regime, the standard deduction for salary is generally ₹50,000. In this example, taxable salary before other eligible deductions is ₹3,28,400. That amount produces a preliminary slab calculation, but an eligible resident individual with qualifying total income not exceeding ₹5 lakh may receive the Section 87A rebate.

As a result, the illustrative old-regime tax can also be zero. A person with other taxable income, a different residency status or special-rate income may have a different liability. The example should not be interpreted as a universal tax exemption for everyone earning four lakh rupees.

Why TDS may still appear on a payslip

Employers estimate salary-related tax withholding using available payroll information and employee declarations. Other income, previous employment earnings, bonus payments and corrections during the year may influence monthly TDS. A payroll deduction can therefore differ from a simple annual tax estimate divided by twelve.

Use the monthly salary TDS calculator when reviewing withholding. The tax regime comparison calculator is useful if you have other earnings or deductions that make the choice less straightforward.

For the official tax framework and filing requirements, consult the Income Tax Department. A salary estimator is not a substitute for your final income-tax computation.

How Different Salary Structures Change 4 LPA In-Hand Pay

The following scenarios illustrate how take-home salary can vary without changing the ₹4 lakh annual CTC. They assume zero income tax, no annual variable pay and no employer costs other than the amounts explicitly described.

Scenario A: capped PF and employer PF inside CTC

Employer PF of ₹21,600 is included in annual CTC, and employee PF is ₹1,800 per month. The resulting gross cash salary is ₹3,78,400 annually. With no professional tax, estimated monthly take-home is ₹29,733.

Scenario B: capped PF with ₹200 professional tax

Keep the same salary structure but introduce ₹200 of monthly professional tax. Annual professional tax becomes ₹2,400. Estimated monthly in-hand salary falls to ₹29,533, before any additional employee deductions.

Scenario C: employer PF outside the quoted CTC

Suppose the ₹4 lakh figure represents annual gross cash pay, and employer PF is funded separately. With employee PF of ₹1,800 per month and no professional tax, estimated monthly take-home becomes ₹31,533. Confirm the employer's definition of CTC before using this scenario.

Scenario D: variable pay included in the package

Suppose ₹40,000 of the annual package is variable compensation. Under the original capped-PF assumptions, annual gross cash pay is ₹3,78,400, but fixed gross cash pay becomes ₹3,38,400. Fixed monthly take-home is approximately ₹26,400 before professional tax.

The annual variable amount may be paid later, partly, or not at all depending on its conditions. For that reason, it is safer to budget using recurring fixed salary and treat uncertain incentives separately.

Questions to ask before accepting an offer

  • Is the advertised ₹4 lakh package entirely fixed, or does it contain variable compensation?
  • Are employer PF, gratuity and insurance costs included in CTC?
  • What is the monthly basic salary and the applicable PF contribution basis?
  • Which professional tax or other statutory deductions apply?
  • What is the expected fixed monthly gross salary before employee deductions?
  • Are joining bonuses, reimbursements or retention incentives subject to conditions?

These questions help you compare salary offers on the basis of predictable cash flow rather than headline compensation alone. For detailed offer analysis, visit the offer-letter salary breakdown calculator.

06 HOW TO USE IT

How To Use the Monthly Take-Home Calculator

The 4 LPA Salary In-Hand: Monthly Take-Home Calculator 2026 starts with ₹4,00,000 already entered. You can change that figure to compare another salary package, or use the nearby salary presets to switch between common annual CTC values.

  1. Enter annual CTC. Use the amount stated in your offer letter rather than the monthly salary you expect to receive.
  2. Select your tax regime. Choose the new regime, old regime or lower estimated tax option.
  3. Choose the PF method. Select capped PF, full-basic-pay PF or no PF, according to your actual payroll arrangement.
  4. Enter basic pay and employer PF treatment. Check whether the employer's contribution is already part of the quoted package.
  5. Add professional tax and variable pay. Use payslip figures and the offer's bonus schedule when available.
  6. Review the results. Compare fixed monthly take-home, annual net cash compensation and estimated tax under both regimes.

The advanced inputs support a simplified old-regime HRA estimate. Enter actual annual HRA received, rent paid, city classification and other qualifying deductions. The calculator does not automatically assume an HRA allowance because not every employer uses the same salary structure.

If the result differs from your bank credit, inspect the payslip line by line. Differences may arise from insurance, ESI, gratuity treatment, arrears, reimbursements, loans, attendance adjustments or tax withholding changes that the simplified model does not include.

Common salary calculation mistakes

A frequent mistake is treating annual CTC divided by twelve as monthly take-home. Another is deducting employer PF twice or counting variable compensation as guaranteed monthly pay. Both errors can produce misleading salary expectations.

It is also important not to assume that every employee has ₹1,800 PF, ₹200 professional tax or zero income tax. These values depend on specific statutory and payroll circumstances. Use the calculator's editable fields to reflect the actual structure rather than relying on a generic percentage.

For additional context, compare your calculation with the monthly salary slip calculator and the gross salary calculator. The most reliable comparison starts with your written salary components.

TAX REFERENCE / 07

New Tax Regime Slabs for FY 2026–27

The new tax regime uses progressive rates. Each rate applies to the corresponding portion of taxable income, rather than automatically applying the highest rate to all income.

For eligible resident individuals, the Section 87A rebate can reduce tax on ordinary income within the qualifying threshold. The salary standard deduction also matters when converting gross salary into taxable salary income.

At a ₹4 lakh annual CTC, ordinary salary income alone will generally fall well below the new-regime taxable-income threshold at which slab tax begins. However, other income and special tax provisions may change the final outcome.

Review official guidance and the Section 87A rebate calculator before making a tax decision.

QUICK ANSWERS / 10

Frequently Asked Questions About 4 LPA Salary

These answers cover common questions about take-home pay, deductions, tax and salary structure.

01 What is the monthly in-hand salary for 4 LPA?+

Under the worked example on this page, estimated monthly in-hand salary is approximately ₹29,733. This assumes employer PF of ₹1,800 per month included in CTC, employee PF of ₹1,800 per month, zero professional tax and zero income tax. Your actual salary can differ.

02 Is 4 LPA equal to ₹33,333 per month?+

₹4,00,000 divided by twelve equals approximately ₹33,333.33. That is the monthly equivalent of annual CTC, not necessarily the monthly amount deposited in your bank. Employer costs and employee deductions can reduce take-home pay.

03 Is income tax deducted on a 4 LPA salary in 2026?+

For an eligible resident individual earning only ordinary salary income at this level, the estimated income tax is generally zero under the new regime. Other income, special-rate income, residency status and payroll circumstances can change the result.

04 How much PF is deducted from 4 LPA?+

PF depends on the applicable wage base and contribution policy. At 12% of a ₹15,000 monthly wage base, employee PF is ₹1,800. At 12% of a ₹13,333.33 basic-pay amount, the contribution is approximately ₹1,600 per month.

05 Can 4 LPA provide ₹30,000 monthly in-hand?+

Yes, some salary structures can produce take-home pay near or above ₹30,000. For example, with ₹1,600 monthly employee PF and matching employer PF included in CTC, the illustrative result is approximately ₹30,133 before professional tax and other deductions.

06 Is employer PF deducted from in-hand salary?+

Employer PF is an employer contribution, not an employee deduction from gross salary. However, when employer PF is included in CTC, it reduces the portion of the quoted package available as gross cash compensation. Employee PF is then deducted separately from gross salary.

07 Does professional tax apply to everyone earning 4 LPA?+

No. Professional tax is governed by applicable state rules. Some employees have no deduction, while others may pay different amounts. Use your actual payslip or the relevant state authority's guidance instead of assuming a national flat rate.

08 Which tax regime is better for a 4 LPA employee?+

For someone with only ordinary salary income at this level, both regimes may result in zero tax after applicable deductions and rebates. The best choice depends on other income, eligibility and personal circumstances. Compare the full annual tax calculation rather than only CTC.

09 Does 4 LPA include bonus and variable pay?+

That depends on the employer's offer. Some companies include performance incentives or bonuses in annual CTC. Such amounts may not be guaranteed monthly payments. The calculator separates annual variable compensation from recurring fixed monthly salary.

10 Why is my bank credit lower than the calculator result?+

Your payslip may include deductions not covered by this simplified estimator, including insurance, employee state insurance, labour welfare contributions, salary advances or attendance adjustments. Actual PF, professional tax and TDS may also differ from the selected assumptions.

11 Is a 4 LPA salary good for a fresher?+

Whether a salary is suitable depends on the role, skills, city, household expenses, career prospects and benefits. Compare the fixed monthly take-home with expected rent, transport, food and savings needs rather than judging the offer solely by its annual headline.

12 Can this calculator replace my official payslip?+

No. The calculator provides an educational estimate using the amounts you enter. Your employer's payroll records, offer-letter breakup, Form 16 and applicable statutory rules determine the actual components and deductions.
